Default Upgrading from Windows 98 to 98SE

I would like to upgrade my OS from 98 to 98SE. I have been told to get a disk that used to be available form Microsoft to do just that, but it is no longer available from them. If I am able to locate such a disk, can someone give me an idea what the pitfalls might be if I go ahead and do the install? The main reason I want to do it is because I want to purchase music online and all the sites require at least Windows 98SE. Otherwise, I am quite content for now with the OS on the computer I have (450MHz, 80GB hard drive).

Do I have to use that specific Upgrade (or Update) disk to go from 98 to 98SE? I see that Upgrades for 3.1 and 95 to 98SE are around and available, but will they also do the trick for a michine that already has 98 First Edition on it? Your input is much appreciated. Thanks.

Eddie,

There are many web sites that offer Win98se upgrade disks for a small
fee and in my opinion it is a good idea to upgrade. I just did it myself
and for the following reasons:

1 - Substantial improvement in USB functionality
2 - Improved performance
3 - Continued MS support for security, etc.
4 - Improved Networking

My update went smoothly, took about a half hour and my old W98 machine
works fine and most of all was easy to set up on my home network.

Good luck, Fred

Hi Eddie,

Win98SE can be found for sale at www.pricewatch.com or eBay.
Look for the "Retail upgrade install". The upgrade should go smoothly.

Tip: If you dont have the Product Key for the installed version of Win98
any more look it up in the registry before doing the upgrade in case you
need to install Win98 in the future.

To do so go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Win98/WinME look for ProductKey in the right pane.

Or if you are not comfortable searching the registry and Windows is running:
Go to VBScript Tools by Bill James and download: “Windows 9x ProductKey
Saver”
http://billsway.com/vbspage/?r=my&r=...BScript&r=Page.

Thanks, Fred. Sounds encouraging. I will see if I can get a copy now that you've bolstered my confidence.

Thanks, Bert. I wouldn't have thought to grab the Product Key before
proceeding. Good tip.

I've seen Win98 to Win98SE upgrade CDs at swap meets for $5. You can find
them on eBay but probably will have to pay more. Check your local area.
