Default Anti-Virus Protection

I could use some advice on what is a good anti-virus protection tool for ME.
I just did a complete reinstall of Windows ME and got rid of Freedom
Anti-Virus which was free from my former internet provider Adelphia. I had
a number of problems with my computer that seem to start when I installed
Freedom.

Any recommendations? Free protection would be nice but not if it causes the
problems I had with Freedom.

Thanks, Eugene

AntiVir and Avast are two solid free AV's that play nice with Win ME.

AntiVir ( CON - there is a popup window that appears during the updating
process. Some find it intrusive.
PRO - it is excellent at detecting newer malwares )
http://www.free-av.com/

Avast ( CON - some of the Shields need to be disabled; IM Shield is not
needed if you do not use IM's; Email Shield is redundant and may cause
issues with emails; Network Shield only applies if you're on a home network.
PRO - No hinderance on the system when configured properly and keeps it
protected fairly well one combined with Safe Hex
http://www.claymania.com/safe-hex.html)

Eugene

I have used Avast for several years and am quite happy with it.

AV-Test

Casual users may be far happier with one of the many suites available now,
which will automatically update the AV, firewall, anti-spam, and spyware
modules -- great for the kids' machines.

Got a suggestion for an AV or only recondite and non existing urls?

Txs, Alias. It's been a while since I've been there, too.
I'll fix the URL's.

Alias, here is the updated list of AV benchmarking organizations.

The Virus Bulletin
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index

ICSA Labs - TrueSecure Corp.
ICSA Certified Anti-Virus Products
http://www.icsalabs.com/icsa/topic.php?tid=dfgdf$gdhkkjk-kkkk

AV-Test
http://www.av-test.org/
http://www.av-test.org/index.php?menue=1&lang=0

Review: Free Antivirus Software
Antivirus.about.com 02/2006
http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivi...s/a/freeav.htm

While I have experience with several AV tools, I cannot possibly examine as
many as these organizations do.
My recommendations can not avoid the inevitable bias of my limited
experience.
However, even a casual user can review the results reported above and make
an informed decision.

The new AV-test review about the three major "free" AV tools is where many
will wish to start.
And many casual users will do well to consider a suite of tools, with
automatic updating.
