Reload Win98SE over original
I am running Win98SE on partition c: and WinXP Pro on partition e: From the
boot loader, when win98se is selected, I get an error from "shell" about not finding krnl32.exe. I believe I had a virus and have cleaned my machine from several sources. Luckily I have WinXP to do all this. I also have a win98se startup disk and was able to run scanreg. The registry was damaged and I repaired it and then restored from an earlier backup. But I still have the same krnl32.exe problem. Is there a simple fix to this? If not, I will need to reload Win98SE because I do not have a backup. Could I not just rename c:\windows to windowsx and then start the whole install process again? -- Rick |

Rick, Yes, I've done it several times for troubleshooting. You can rename the folders from Dos to switch between the two installs then reboot. May be simpler to fix the problem though. That file is part 2 viruses. Depending on which one you had, you need to clean up a bit more. In a dual boot configuration, if you reinstall 98 with XP still installed, you will have other problems to fix in order to boot properly.

Reload Win98SE over original
I think I am OK.
1. I have already checked for viruses with housecall and panda yesterday. 2. I cannot figure out how to Disable System Restore in XP. Under Control Panel, System, I see no "Properties" tab (as described in Help) and checkbox to use??? 3. I have run regedit from windows in c: and e: locations. A search for krnl32.exe (all selections) finds nothing. I think I am clean because I have rebooted several times. 4. There is no file at C:\script.ini 5. The Epon virus is supposed to delete: C:\IO.SYS (still there) C:\MSDOS.SYS (still there) C:\CONFIG.SYS (not there - I think I did not use this and autoexec.bat with win98) C:\boot.ini (not there - not sure if it was there or not) If I am not seeing something, I would appreciate your help in re-focusing my attention. If I am clean, what can I do to get rid of the krnl32.exe error and get win98se working again? Thanks -- Rick "Brian A." wrote: That file is part 2 viruses. Start Notepad, open the "c:\windows\system.ini" file, find the "[boot]" section,
and see if the "shell=" line contains a reference to "krnl32.exe". If so, change it to read simply "shell=explorer.exe" and save the change. Ben "Rick_Urquhart" wrote in message ... Reload Win98SE over original
Hi Ben,
Of course, I cannot do this from Win98SE because it will not run. If I run msconfig from WinXPPro e: partition, everything related to that operating system comes up. krnl32.exe is not under the startup tab. If I go to c:\windows\system and run msconfig, I get several errors that my config.sys file is damaged or not there and then after pressing OK several times I get the msconfig window with only the main and startup tabs. krnl32.exe is not under that startup tab either and I do recognize most of the other programs that should be running. I do not have a backup when I select that from msconfig. What's next? Rick -- Rick "Ben Myers" wrote: Click "Start", "Run", type "msconfig" and click "OK". Reload Win98SE over original
Ben, despite my earlier response, I might have more problems than I thought.
I have tried all these things from winxp pro because win98se does not function: 1. In c:\ I had an autoexec.bat file but no config.sys file under windows. I am not sure if this is what msconfig is looking for or not. In dos I could see config.sys. It was hidden in windows for some reason. 2. From my win98se startup disk I did a scandisk of c:. It found directories and did repairs. Then I copied over autoexec.bat and config.sys from an earlier backup I had when I was reloading 2 years ago. 3. When I run msconfig from winxp pro from c:\windows\system, I get 4 errors: System Configuration Utility cannot read config.sys file. System cannot find the path specified. On hitting OK I get the same error for autoexec.bat, system.ini, and win.ini. Then after about 30 seconds the PC powers down. So I am not sure what is my problem.
