Default Loss of Internet connection

Thought the general board would be best for this one as it
could be anything. Hope someone can help.
I have about 5 minutes after booting up to connect to the
net. After this, no connection. Even if I do connect
immediately after re-boot, I still only get a few minutes
surfing before I'm disconnected. Running Win98se
connecting to NTL world through a set top box with a 3 com
network card. Hmmmmm

Well, do you have McAfee? Turn off it's Auto-System scan (leave all
others on), & see whether the problem goes away. I know a cure, if
that's it.

Here is what seems finally to have fixed that condition for me...
http://us.mcafee.com/
Take the latest "Superdat" (SDAT4367.EXE, back then anyway). It comes
with a full set of definitions, as well as whatever performs the fix
(probably a new engine). The site did say McAfee v.8 cannot update by
way of Superdat, though.

Naturally, you don't do that, if you are not McAfee.

Hmm. The experience you described sure was one symptom of a batty McAfee
that only recently I have accidentally fixed. Well, how are you set
at...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab, Settings button,
Advanced button".

There are two "Disconnect" boxes there.

Thats not it. I'm connected through an NIC and not a dial
up, so this section is greyed out.

Default Loss of Internet connection

(1) Try your NIC's WEB site.
(2) Un/re-install NIC related stuff, their DUN/whatever.
(3) If no one else drops into here, start a new thread, & outline your
setup & the steps you've tried so far.
