Default Going Nuts - Antivirus Program - PLEASE HELP

Okay, I cannot find an antivirus program that doesn't slow
down my computer. I tried the free ones suggested and
they didnt' work. I would like to ask Symantec about
their different products "Antivirus" and "Internet
Security", but I cannot find any place on their website
where you can ask any general information like that.
Maybe because I have windows 98, that is a detriment. I
have 384 mgs of Ram, but usually only 60% free. It is a
Pentium 3. Do I need a firewall, I don't know if my older
Norton had one. But this computer is acting so strange,
windows opening on top of others and then only partially
closing. Sometimes some websites open and sometimes not.
I hate this, it used to be fun working on the comptuer, it
is just a headache now. Can anyone help?

These AV apps are free and should do the job:

Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AVG 6.0
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

Otherwise, it sounds like you may have some spyware problems, so Check your
system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...favorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup More options Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

3. Check in at Windows Update.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

I have installed Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition on numerous home users'
computers, including my own, and have never seen it slow down a system at all. If
you have tried AVG and think it has slowed your system, I agree wirh PA Bear that
there may be spyware or malware already on your system.

Install and update AVG, then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Close all browser windows, run CWShredder and click the Fix button.

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for
Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and
remove what it finds.
Ad-Awa

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove
the items in RED only.

Agree with Pa and Glen. AVG from Grisoft works very well.
If you don't have a firewall you probably have alot of
spy/malware on your system.
Everyone needs a firewall these days.
Sygate has a really good one. It's free for home use.
But what ever firewall you use. You will need to
configure it to do the best job.
A firewall is a tool. Like any tool, for it to work to it's
full potential, you need to know how to use it.

The number of people trying to use your PC or affect use of your PC remotely
has increased dramatically, so has its stealth. The fun factor has been
overtaken by constant awareness, software for defense, and guarded use.
Expect any fun factor left to be whittled further down in the future.

What about having a swapable HDD in a tray setup.

One HDD when surfing.
Swap to other when off the web.

That doesn't sound like fun to me. Each to his or her own, I guess.

Do you have a virus? Yes, all firewalls and anti-virus

will slow Wind 98 down because it is using resources
(memory) Try turning off other TSR (terminate and stay
resident) programs by using Crtl Alt Del for a quick fix.
But go to Start, Run, type msconfig, press Enter, Click on
Start Up tab, scroll through each item. BE VERY, VERY
CAREFUL, DON'T DESELECT OR UNCHECKMARK ANYTHING UNLESS YOU
KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!
