ICS installation.
I am trying to network a 98se and XP machine. The 98se machine has the internet connection.
When i try to install ICS on the 98se machine it asks for files that are on the 98se cd. Then it says there are not found which means the installation cannot install ICS. The files it asks for are listed here http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q229965 The machines are connected through a wireless network and are sharing files and can communicate with each other. It is most if not all the files listed in the above web page that it can not find. If you need anymore info let me know and i will get back. Thanks in advance. |

I bought the computer to put into a loft conversion(for my kid). The cable modem is downstairs and does not have enough wire to put upstairs. In a perfect world i would do this but my kid wont let me.
Should ICS work on 98se? Does it work on 98se? or is there a free program that wil do it? (Im out of money buying the computer) "madmax" wrote: hippy1001 wrote: I am trying to network a 98se and XP machine. The 98se machine has the internet connection. ICS installation.
Yep, that's an easy one. If your CD is not a retail Windows 98 CD (or at
least an OEM CD from Microsoft) the files won't be on it. You'll either have to beg/borrow/buy one, or check your hard drive for the Windows Setup files (several dozen files whose names start with WIN98 and end with the letters CAB). -- Richard G. ICS installation.
Regarding using ICS, my advice is - don't. With the price of wireless
routers, wired routers, print servers, wireless cards, NICs, and CAT 5 cable at rock bottom, ICS is no longer necessary. So I suggest that you reconfigure your LAN. Get a wireless router that includes a print server (mine is a D-Link DI-714P+ costing about $50), plug it into your cable or DSL modem, connect each computer to the router with a CAT 5 cable (RJ45) connected to a NIC (about $20), and connect your printer to the router print server port. If you want wireless rather than wired connections for your computers, replace the NIC in each computer with a wireless card (about $25). With a setup like this, there is no such thing as a "host" computer, in that all computers in your LAN have independent access to the internet whether or not another computer is turned on, and also each computer has independent access to the printer whether or not another computer is turned on. Further, your computers in your LAN will have access to each other's files via file sharing. Just a thought. |

yeh it would be cheaper than buying an xp upgrade for the old computer.
Well thanks for all your time, I have some more saving to do. All the best. "Papa" wrote: Regarding using ICS, my advice is - don't.
