Default Need help installing windows 98SE from a hard drive

I am doing a clean install of windows 98SE from C hard drive. I copied
only Win98 folder from the 98SE installer CD to it. Is that win98
folder all I will need to install everything?
This particular computer had a lot of add-ons in the PCI and ISA
slots, which I took out temporarily. I have the drivers on floppy and
or cds for all of the removed items.
Would it be better to install the 98SE OS with just the graphics card
in and then one by one later turn off the computer and one by one plug
in each card and reboot That way I would be letting the hardware
wizard tell me it found new hardware and then put in the proper CD or
floppy for each thing and install the drivers. That way windows will
not guess at what I should have installed driver wise and avoid the
yellow exclamation marks needed to be fixed in the device manager
anyway.
The cover is off the computer so no big deal as to what needs to be
installed one by one. I also feel it would be more methodic and not
getting a head of things to do it this way. I sometimes have trouble
with device manager letting me know just what item inside the computer
it is telling me is not installed driver wise correctly.
The order I would start to plug in would be soundcard, modem, USB
card, SCSI card etc. (No network card if you are wondering).
Oh just to make sure I created the nesting of folders on C drive to
hold the installers Win98 folder as windows\options\cabs so to start
the windows setup command from the C: prompted would I type the C
again and the complete path to the win98 folder?
So the command line would be C:\windows\options\cabs\win98\setup.exe

Yes, that command to run setup is fine. I assume you have already made
the C: drive bootable, either by using the /s switch when you did the
format (format /s), or by doing a sys c: from a Win98 boot floppy.

Yes, it would be simplest to install Windows while only the graphics
card is installed, then install the drivers for it after the
installation is done. If you want to take the extra time and shut down
that many times, you can do the one-at-a-time method of installing the
cards, to avoid confusion. Also, it will help avoid resource allocation
battles that could occur if two or more devices are detected at the same
time.

I don't know what motherboard and chipset is involved, but any
motherboard/chipset drivers should usually be installed BEFORE
installing any other drivers, including the graphics driver.

Your proposed card installation order looks good, though you might
consider moving the SCSI card up in the order. I would still install
the sound card right after the graphics card, but might install the SCSI
after that. Why are you installing a SCSI card? What is going to be
attached to it?

My sister had the computer built at PC Club on the west coast. Once I
wrote them about a problem she had with no reply from them. Now I have
no idea if they are still in business. The computer, she and me are no
longer near the west coast.

The Mother Board is an ABIT BE6 using Soft Menu II to set the Bios
chip made by AWARD. The motherboard manual says soft menu allows the
board to be controlled with it rather than having to use jumpers. I
kind of wish the other was true because not sure the BIOS settings are
all correct. My sister in trying to fix problems a while ago hit the
load default settings and saved them at exit. It changed the CPU speed
and who knows what else. At startup it said the CPU was unworkable so
I kept changing it till it no longer had that error message. The only
speed that did not bring up the error message at startup was 500 (100)
so it is set on that. We are sure it is a Pentium III MMX CPU but not
sure of the speed. She thinks it is 500 or 501 MHz but I could not
find the second speed setting of 501. Also have no idea what the
multiplier thing is all about. The chip has a heat sink on it and a
fan over that and is not able to be seen to read the top for
information. The only way to get to see it would involve removing the
power supply and other things to get the fan and heat sink off.

I do have a CD from ABIT that contains: IDE format utility, Ultra ATA/
66 driver, IDE Bus Master drivers and Winbond Hardware Doctor is a
self-diagnostic and XStore Pro is a hard disk enhancement utility.
Also a utility that facilitates flashing the BIOS.
In a folder marked drivers there are 3 files related to the HPT366
Device Driver for Microsoft for Windows 95/98. It says to install them
after windows is installed. The first time I tried to do this install
I had all the cards in and sort of doing it blindly I had yellow
explanation marks at both the primary and secondary IDE controller in
device manager. So I expect to see them again after this next try.
Since I never install the above-mentioned driver might the
installation take care of the yellow marks in device manager? And if I
tell it to update the drivers for both the primary and secondary IDE
controller will I point it in the direction of the three files on this
CD?

As far as hardware already in and to be installed as I go along:

There are two CD-ROMs in it master is a Lite-on LTN403L CD player and
a Mitsumi CR-4804TE CD-RW burner as slave. Attached to IDE slot #1

The master hard disk is a Maxtor ATA/66 model 90650U2. The slave,
which is disconnected for now to avoid confusion during installation,
is a Seagate ATA/33(?) ST34323A.
And yes when I formatted it I used the \s command to boot in dos from
C for the installation. Attached to IDE slot #3 that supports ATA/66

The graphics card is a Voodoo 3DFX A9680108.

The SCSI ISA card will be used for an Umax scanner and a zip drive
that will not always be hooked up to it.
It is marked as a Domex Rev A UDS-IS11 on it.

The sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live model CT4830

The PCI modem card is a Smart Modular Technologies model 9109-2. But
also during the installation of the driver not sure which port to
choose Com 1 or 2 or Com 3. How are these ports associated with the
two serial and one parallel (printer) (LTP) ports on the back? The
mother board manual talkes about Com 1 and 2 in relation to the two
physical ports on the back of the computer. Eventually I will have a
printer hooked up to the printer parallel port on the back. And a
wacom graphics tablet hooked up to one of the serials ports on the
back.

The USB card has sw/n 11022041980 on it and nothing else in the way of
markings. I bet it is 1.1 USB standard. When I put it in for her years
ago I do not remember needing to install drivers though I may have.
The motherboard does have two USB ports on it that did work after my
first windows install attempt. So apparently windows did install
drivers for USB. As I said not sure the card will need additional
driver installation.

I know that is a lot of information and questions as to step by step
on how to proceed with the software and hardware installations of this
vintage computer with its vintage hardware circa 1999. But any help I
get will be greatly appreciated and a big Thank You! In advance. I
hope you check any follow up questions I have as I start to get the
computer up and configured in this string.

http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.abi...com/downloads/

some time you get
Abit-usa.com
Inquire about this domain name

but do not give up
For some time the Software was archive and you get a Download!

The Best way to Search the archive is to right Click the Year and open in a
new widow or Tab!
And Close just the new widow or Tab!
So you can go to the next Year !
The Drive or there just take time!
