ActiveX problem

2. Have used McAfee VSCleanup tool to uninstall VirusScan . I then
reinstalled same.
3. Attempted to install McAfee ActiveX controls using the McAfee AXC tool
but failed.
4. Have downloaded and installed/reinstalled Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack1.
5. Ditto. Windows Script Engine and Visual Basic Runtime .

Advice on what is causing the problem which prevents the installation of
ActiveX components and how to solve the issue would be much appreciated.
If I were to Backup my Hard Disk and then reformat it, reinstall the
operating system and then restore the programs and files from the Backup
would I be likely to finish up with the problem restored also.?

Many thanks for your reply.

When I execute ManinstAXC.bat only one of two .dll files (Mcinscti.dll) is
removed from the desktop. In respect of the other file I get an error
message C:\Windows\Desktop\mcgdmgr.dll=c:\Windows\System\ msgdmgr.dll (unable
to delete destination) .
The McAfee ActiveX controls
are not successfully installed and registered unless both files have
disappeared from the desktop.

After a bit of experimentation, I see you will get that error, if "move" is tried & a file of that name & attributed Read-Only already exists in the destination...

Overwrite C:\WINDOWS\System\Msgdmgr.dll (Yes/No/All)?y
C:\Msgdmgr.dll = C:\WINDOWS\System\Msgdmgr.dll [Unable to delete destination]

SO...

(a) Open Explorer to C:\Windows\System

Thank you for your offer of help. I have tried your suggested fix and yes
the file mcgdmgr.dll was moved into the Windows System directory but
unfortunately that did not solve the problem which incidentally I am having
with other programs also,not just VirusScan. As a check I tried to run
McAfee virtual technician and got the error message The ActiveX component
installation failed.
The problem appears to be within Internet Explorer 6.

I don't have or know the McAfee Virtual Technician. Is it crashing because it can't install it's ActiveX? Or is it saying it's examined your system & discovered a missing ActiveX component? What other applications have the same problem?

As far as your other complaint...

I had a similar experience with McAfee v.5.21.1000. With any Scan Engine other than v.4.3.20 (older OR newer!), I had to turn off the auto-System Scan or suffer sluggishness & Internet connection problems. Ask the people at McAfee whether there is an alternative Scan Engine for you-- especially if you are a paying customer!

The error message I get when I try to run McAfee Virtual Technician is that
it cannot check my computer because the activeX component failed.
McAfee Virtual Technician is a McAfee Support tool which scans your computer
to make sure that your McAfee products are working correctly. It is a
program that McAfee likes you to run before calling a live technician.
Another program which has failed is the Hewlett Packard product detection
tool which automatically detects product names /numbers etc. The program
attempts to install a plug in. Then an error message is received “HP product
detection unable to continue� because inter alia “your internet security
options are set to disable downloading of activeX components. Check that
privacy level is set no higher than Medium High.� It is not.
Others are or have had the same problem as I am having and it appears that
the root cause is a recent update issued by Microsoft which has changed the
functionality of ActiveX.
I do not see the slowing down of my computer as being a separate unrelated
problem.
I know that VirusScan can and does adversely impact on the speed of the
computer but the extreme sluggishness now experienced started with the
ActiveX failures.
To combat the problem in McAfee VirusScan I have deselected “Start
ActiveShield when Windows starts� and in advanced options I have selected
File types to scan “ Program files and documents only�. My modus operandi at
present is to boot up the computer and leave VirusScan disabled until
immediately before making a dial up connection to the internet. Then when I
would come off the internet I would disable VirusScan again. I am working on
the assumption that there is no possible threat of virus infection except
when I am on the internet or installing a program/data eg. from a CD of
dubious origin.
I am working wityh VirusScan ver10 . Engine version 4400

McAfee Scan Engine v.4400 slows my computer & makes NET access impossible. I had to revert to v.4.3.20 or turn off Auto-System Scan. Your newer McAfee doesn't allow turning off just that one.

But you are right. No engine slows things quite like you report. Also, as Hewlett Packard has ActiveX problems like your McAfee, it does seem ActiveX is at fault.

(a) What do you see at... "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files"?
Those have an involvement with ActiveX. If you delete them, they should reload when a site needs one.

(b) What was the recent update you took that mussed your ActiveX? Do you see it at "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab?

| I had a similar experience with McAfee v.5.21.1000. With any Scan Engine other than v.4.3.20 (older OR newer!), I had to turn off the auto-System Scan or suffer sluggishness & Internet connection problems. Ask the people at McAfee whether there is an alternative Scan Engine for you-- especially if you are a paying customer!

Caution might be advised in giving advise to remove ActiveX components
from Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder - they may not be
reloadable due to update 912812 which is known far and wide to break
ActiveX functionality.

"Microsoft plans to address the issue " - oh, I hope so.

Only solutions I know of for broken ActiveX after 912812 has been
applied is to remove 912812 or follow xenomorph's 'fix' below which
appears to allow one to use 912812 with a couple of retrograded files
and registry entries. Of course retrograded files are direct holes in
security but until MS actually produces a fix for 98 (the only product
left out of the ActiveX fix release...) we have no other options for
broken ActiveX after a run in with update 912812. 912812 will show in
Add/Remove Programs list as 'Internet Explorer Q912812' if it installed
properly.
