Microsoft Site DL Error
Anyone with a direct pipeline to Microsoft?
I tried to install a script engine repair/update on this page: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en After making me jump through the Genuine Advantage Hoops (for 98? - give me a break), the file opened with Paint Shop Pro. So I did it again but this time saved it to desktop first. It turns out that the file they say you are about to download, Windows9x-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.exe, turns out to be Windows9x-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.psd I finally got it to install by changing the file name to the executable they claimed it to be in the first place. I know we are only lowly 98 users but that is pretty shoddy treatment (and who wants to be treated like shod). |

I do not see that behaviour here or on any of the systems at work where I have
downloaded that file. I suspect the issue is not with WU, but with something on your system. ClickStartRun, type: regedit Click OK. Navigate to, and expand, this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExpl orer\Plugins\Extension See if there is a key named .exe below it, thus: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExpl orer\Plugins\Extension\.exe If the ".exe" key exists there, export it and then right-click and delete the key from the Registry. Also post back with what other keys are shown under that key. The best method is to export this key to a Text file: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExpl orer\Plugins\Extension and then post back with a copy/paste of the text. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Roger Fink" wrote in message ... I'll definitely follow up on this and post back. As a side issue, the reason
I did this download is described in a current post in the inetexplorer.ie6.browser group. Unfortunately, installing or repairing (not sure which) script engine 5.6 seemed to improve things initially, but the problem still seems to recur. Since no one has offered a response perhaps you or others could take a look at it, since I know crossposting is discouraged. glee wrote: I do not see that behaviour here or on any of the systems at work where I have downloaded that file. At this location,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExpl orer\Plugins\Extension , there are no subkeys at all, if that is the right term. In the right hand pane there is the Default value, that's all. There is no data in the Default value. Using a "match exactly" search of the keys, there is a .exe key at the following four locations (values & data for each are listed immediately below). In each instance, there are no subkeys under the .exe key. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe (Default: "exefile" , Content Type: "application/x-msdownload") HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\.exe (Default: [no data]) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.exe (Default: "exefile" , Content Type: "application/x-msdownload") HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Applications\. exe (Default: [no data]) glee wrote: I do not see that behaviour here or on any of the systems at work where I have downloaded that file. OK, well it was worth a try. The other keys you did find are supposed to be there.
I'll try to take a look at your thread in the browser group, when I get some time to head over there. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Roger Fink" wrote in message ... Thanks Glen. I find it interesting that 98Guy was presented with a wholly
different file name, and not a faulty file type. Totally OT here, but I have to mention that the "unofficial Native USB Mass Storage Driver for Win98SE" you recommended and discussed at length awhile back turned out to be a real lifesaver this weekend. I'll spare you the details, which would amount to a pretty long post. glee wrote: OK, well it was worth a try. The other keys you did find are supposed to be there. Beg your pardon. The file name is the same. Sort of.
