defrag

I am running windows 98 SE. When I defrag, it gets to around 10 % then it
starts all over again. Never finishes.
Anybody knows what could be wrong? Is there another defraging program out
there you would recommend that is compatible with windows 98?

First, try running defrag in Safe Mode. You'll probably find it works OK.

If it runs ok in Safe Mode, then in all probability, you have some
background program/utility running in Normal Mode and you should take a look
at ScanDefrag v5.5

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Defrag (and
Scandisk) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing.

grab the defrag utility for winME, (google for it) and swap it for your 98 one.
you will find it (usually) in 'c/windows' folder......
cut the 98 version from c/windows and plonk it in a temp folder prior to putting in the new ME
version.... you wont regret doing it. (reboot after doing this.)

also, delete the folder 'c/windows/APPLOG folder prior to running new defrag proggy.
also(2), make sure No other applications are running whilst defragging... once done, reboot and do
it again; and if you have a h/d with separate partitions, then do them one at a time. (Do Not
run it on any partition that has an NTFS on it... ie, if you are dual booting with 'xp' or etc
which resides on a partition on the same h/d)

When you open Defragmenter, first click the Settings button, and un-select the
option to re-arrange/optimize files, and save the setting for use every time you run
Defrag.

One simple workaround is to start in Safe Mode, and then run Defrag from there.

running in the background. Such as, a Screen Saver, other programs too. I
will tell you what I do, first disconnect from the Internet, set your Screen
Saver to (none). Go into msconfig by going to Start Runtype in msconfig
then click on OK, find the Startup tab at top, click on that then write down
everything you have checked there on a piece of paper, so when you start up
your machine after defrag, you have a list of what to put in the start up
after the defrag. Then restart the machine. Check to see if you have
anything there checked. If not, do your defrag. After defrag is complete, go
back to the msconfig and check the things you had unchecked. then restart
your machine. Reconnect to the Internet. If you want, you can set up your
Screen Saver again. This has always worked for me. I hope this helps.

the Windows ME defragger is that it is not necessarily meant for Windows 98
Second Edition and while it may work fine at first, it just may cause more
problems later on but even if it does not cause any problems there are other
reasons for not using it. I would consider whether or not there are legal
issues with Microsoft on using their Windows ME defragger on Windows 98
Second Edition and I am just {shocked} that dave "a so-called Christian" from
what I gathered from another post would even consider doing something that
might be remotely illegal and I think that dave has not considered what the
so called "Higher Power" might do in this situation if dave continues to
blaze along the trail that dave is moving towards in this life.

Buffalo, I was also wondering if it was legal to use the Windows ME defragger
with Windows 98 Second Edition or is it necessary from a legal standpoint to
get Microsoft's permission? Thank you for the correction, as well. It
always stings and hurts but I certainly do appreciate it in the end. smile
