Don't know who told you Windows Me is limited to 512Mb RAM but that
was incorrect. Even WFWG 3.11 runs fine with more than 512Mb. Only above 768Mb does it start to get dicey. As for Windows Me, I've been running it for some time with 1Gb of RAM with no problems. Just don't go above 1Gb. You want to limit VCACHE to 512Mb though. That's where the problems are. Ubuntu is a fine OS, to be sure, but no need to bury good old Me yet. On Jun 26, 9:50?am, "Ogg" wrote: I really really really wanted to believe that ME would serve me well for the rest of my days with modest upgrades as required. Afterall, I upgraded the original box with USB 2.0 and even replaced the original NIC. ME continued to perform well. But all I really wanted was to be able to load atleast 3 apps in memory (Wordperfect, my browser, and WindowsExplorer as I navigated through files over my network). Suddenly, Explorer.exe would close and fail to reload the Taskbar apps! The only solution was to reboot. Very time consuming and frustrating. Then when I learned that ME is theoretically limited to 512meg ram and that the only way to use more ram is to trick ME to think there is LESS, that disappointed me. Under those conditions it's better to get a new OS that can handle that. And.. I really don't want to spend more $'s on a new box when I've already invested in a fine 120gig hdd, USB 2.0 expansion, 768meg total ram, and a better (DVI-capable) video card. ..Ogg. |

Admittedly, I have sofar only run Ubuntu via Live-CD. .. ..but it was definitely higher than 1024x768. Mine, too, but it got even better with the restricted drivers. That's good to know. I am looking forward to the conversion to Ubuntu. I have a really nice new (yet outdated by today's technology) AGP card with DVI output intended for the old WinME pc. I want to be able to utilize that without incident. |

Other than for yourself and your system I can confidently assure you that Win Me has no such problems and that therefore you need to look a lot closer to home than the operating system for any AGP problems you might have experienced when running Win Me and should check for defective hardware. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows |

AGP problems are documented on the MS tech site. Manipulating Vcache one
source of the problem. "Mike M" wrote.. Once again I have to say that your posts to this thread are the only ones that I can find about Win Me having any problem with AGP. Other than for yourself and your system I can confidently assure you that Win Me has no such problems.. |

The latter one seemed to work ok until I added 512meg for a total of 768meg system ram. Vcache was set to 512. ME with the new card was more unstable. |

Referring to my proposal to attempt to install Ubuntu, Alias wrote :-
Once you've done all that, get back to me about Beryl. Well, I'm sadly disappointed with my (many) attempts to successfully install Ubuntu 6.06 (let alone 7.04). Probably the wrong forum but FWIW - I decided to install it on my D: drive (WinMe being installed on the C: - which runs like a well oiled clock). Big mistake! - It's installed a Boot Manager on the C: which I can't get rid of - but that's another story - and a PITA. v 6.06 runs (if that's the right word) very slowly, eventually recognises my PCI WiFi card and subsequently sees my router but won't let me connect. OTOH, v7.04 doesn't recognise the card (nor my ps/2 mouse either!!) so still doesn't connect. If I try to re-edit the 'Networks' settings in v6.06, it won't reboot - just hangs until I re-install it. Jeepers! I thought that I'd lived thru' enough hours watching spinning egg-timers loading (and re-loading) MS OS's over the past years but they don't hold a candle to Ubuntu. Nah - Sorry Beryl, 'fraid you're going to have to wait. I think I'll stick with WinMe (and XP of course) for a while longer yet. Mart "Alias" wrote in message ... Mart wrote: Thanks Alias, I might now take Ubuntu a bit more seriously and get around to opening one of my boxes, swap the HDD for a spare and install Ubuntu - your response makes it seem a bit more worthwhile. It doesn't run too well on my old 200MMX with 256 MB of RAM, directly from the CD. Probably needs the 'virtual memory' to get things to run a bit more effectively. BTW - did you find the 'restricted drivers' elsewhere on the CD or did you have to download them from a completely different (manufactures web site?) source? Mart The restricted drivers for nVidia can be found once you've installed Ubuntu 7.04 by clicking on System/Administration/Restricted Drivers Manager. It takes five seconds or so. Also, for the codecs, etc. go to http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/ind...e=Installation Once you've downloaded it, just double click on the setup like you would with Windows. Once you've done all that, get back to me about Beryl. Alias snipped |

I don't know but maybe Me and Ubuntu can't co-exist. That's exactly what I plan to do, Alias and, hopefully, successfully too, by dual-booting. I am surprised, that Mart tried his adventure, because you have called attention to it before, if I rmember correctly. Think he might back up and give it another try? There shouldn't be any conflicts between the two, if residing on seperate drives. Come to think of it, he also may have used the wrong version. The one before me is ver. 6.06 LTS, sent to me directly from "Yonder". Harry. Alias "Alias" wrote in message ...
