Security Updates CD and Windows Update
Can anyone explain to me why, on a fresh install of Windows ME, after
installing the Security Updates CD (Feb. 2004), Windows Updates no longer functions? I get there OK, but when I click to scan for updates, it stalls at 0%... Forever. I've tried this twice, from clean install on, with the same results. I've also installed Scripting Engine 5.6 and Repaired IE as per instructions from Windows Update T-Shooter. Even installed Java runtimes and force reinstalled IE6 SP1. No luck. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com |

What you are seeing when you visit the Windows Update site is a known problem and started happening about two weeks ago. The problem is server side not with your PC and the Microsoft's Windows Update team originally denied any responsibility for the problem however the light has started to come on and they have now changed their stance to "we are investigating". I suggest you wait a few days and try again. Since Win Me like all Win 9x operating systems is out of support don't expect those concerned at Microsoft to expend much effort or be in a rush to get this problem fixed. -- Mike Maltby Unquote. Security Updates CD and Windows Update
No explanation Gary, however I wonder what happens if you DON'T use the CD,
but rather go straight to the WU site after freshly installing WinMe and attempt all the updates directly from there. BTW - I'm quite sure that you would have been most patient, mine took some 30 seconds to update from 0% to 33% and maybe a minute or so to complete to 100% (on broadband) so the update scan is certainly still working. My current project is my own Update set for 98, 98SE and ME systems, so that I don't depend on WU. Who knows how much longer 9x users will be able to get in. But I need the info there to know what to include. I'm now doing a new install to see how many more updates it will take if I don't use the SecUp CD, and to try just installing IE6SP1. All I know is that it works before I run Micorosft's Updates CD and not afterwards. BTW - I'm quite sure that you would have been most patient, mine took some 30 seconds to update from 0% to 33% and maybe a minute or so to complete to 100% (on broadband) so the update scan is certainly still working. Security Updates CD and Windows Update
Gary,
Is this the "Unable to install all components" issue? If it is, try this: Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View: - Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK Create a folder named "Old uninstall". Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information. Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files. Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files. You will now be able to install all the troublesome components. If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder and the files you moved. Good luck, Zee "Gary S. Gary, although your proposal seems a fair and plausible reason to undertake
your current project, it doesn't isolate the cause of the failure. In other words, is the CD aspect of the update the cause of the 0% stall or is the problem due (as Zee has partly alluded elsewhere) to the 'current' WU site issue. Maybe there's more than just the Mac issues - as Mike's quote actually mentions 'server side' - hence my suggestion, thus eliminating the CD (or not) as the real cause of the problem. And I would certainly concede that two hours of no progress is a true test of anyone's patience g Mart "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... "Mart" wrote in message ... I tried the IE6 SP1 CD, too (one I made myself from downloads.) Next is to
install IE6, minimal, via WU. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that this server issue goes beyond the Mac page. Just wondering if anyone else is getting the same results. SecUp CD and IE6 SP1 installs don't have this effect on Win98 or 98SE. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Mart" wrote in message ...
