Loss of resources

I'm having problems with IE slowing down and refusing to find web pages
after about 3 minutes on line also applications running very slow.
I have 448 MB of ram and only have AVG anti-virus running in background.
I have NTL broadband.
At the time of writing this NG email my System Resources are 51% with
nothing else running.
I have run full scans with AVG, SpySubtract and Spybot. They all say no
problems.
Does anyone have any ideas please.

51% free resources whilst not ideal will not cause the problems you are
seeing but could well indicate that despite your efforts your PC might
nevertheless be harbouring one or more unwanted "guests" (malware).

look here for instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing
unnecessary programs loading
(enter any item in the startup list in MSCONFIG into the search box on the
