Default Security Updates CD and Windows Update

OK, now I have more testing to do! I installed ME, then the SecUp CD, then
went to WU and the scan succeeded! Only difference from before is that I
*didn't* visit WU and install ActiveX components before installing the SecUp
CD this time, whereas I'd always visited WU before installing the SecUp CD
on previous occasions. This would point to the solution offered by oops!,
perhaps?

Anyway, I now have two scenarios to test, and I'll watch my LAN settings
while I'm at it.

Later.... Much, much later... (where;s my pipe!?)

Did someone say pipe ? w

It's mowst definitely some kind of scripting issue. Is there a firewall
installed ?

My goof! Forgot to show all files after reinstalling ME! DOH!!!

But I don't think this will positively affect my problem with Windows
Updates. Still the same problem -- I can get to WU, but the scan stalls at
0%. I have to think it's something involving Scripting, or the controls, but
everything I've tried along those lines has failed. The only thing that
worked was to NOT go to WU before installing IE6 SP1.

Nope. Fresh installs with nothing at all installed except IE 6. Note, again,
that it does not occur if I DO_NOT visit WU before installing IE6.

Yeah, but what do you do for all the POST-IE6 updates? There's a good

dozen
of them, I'm certain.

Yes I've ran into that just recently myself and there is a work around

it
but
it take time. Format the drive reinstall DO NOT UPDATE TO IE6...
UPDATE
ALL
OTHER UPDATES BEFORE YOU UPDATE IE 6. This will ensure you get all

updates
before the 0% STUCK. That's what I did if not just keep pressing F5

until
it
gives....

good luck

Again, I know about the "Welcome to Mac page" issue. I want to know
if
anyone has determined that the "stuck at 0% scan" is also something

seen
by
others recently, something that might be attributable to the same

server
problem(s). Do you know, have you heard, that the 0% scan error is
also
recently rife amongst ME users? It doesn't happen to my 98/98SE

installs.

Gentleman the problems are with Microsoft. Yes something happened.

It's
fixed
if it happens again just wait a few days and try again.

Stop worring be thankful they don't just take it off the market
completely....

"Gary S. Terhune" wrote:

No, it can't be purchased. It never could be, it was free. There
are

a
few
locations where you can download an ISO of it. Forget where, just

now.

OK, here's a post from "Lee", a few days ago, in the
Win98.Gen_Discussion
group:

-------------------------------------
Vic, our own Menno Hershberger posted an iso of the CD on his site
while it was still available for free. Go here and click continue

to
find and download windowsUpdate2004.iso file.
http://www.mewnlite.com/utilities/

The current direct link is below
http://www.alongthewapsie.com/util/_...Update2004.iso

Thanks, Menno."
-------------------------------------

I will soon offer a 2-CD package with the Security Updates CD and

the
rest
of what's necessary to update 98, 98SE and ME systems, for $3. My
cost,
really. Email me if you want on the list:
gryst at grystmill.com

That Mac page redirect is still occurring. Whether the problem
is
related
to
mine (scan stuck at 0%), I don't know, but it only happens with

ME,
whereas
the Mac page thing happens on all 98, 98SE and ME. (I just keep
trying,
making sure to close all IE windows before next attempt.)

The Updates CD that MS put out in Feb 2004 is wholly

self-contained
and
does
not access the web directly. Only at the end are you offered
some
follow-up
links.
Can that still be purchased and if so where?
TIA

The first visit to WU installs the ActiveX software controls.

If IE6 is installed first, the software controls are installed correctly.

The green bar at WU has to do with javascript.

Ergo, there's something amiss with jscript when the ActiveX controls are
installed first.

Are we on the right track, GAry ?

Loose lips sink ships ... and they also get attached to dangerous
'objects' when used in conjunction w/ alcoholic substances.
Or so I've heard.
