Default Security Updates CD and Windows Update

OK, now I have more testing to do! I installed ME, then the SecUp CD, then
went to WU and the scan succeeded! Only difference from before is that I
*didn't* visit WU and install ActiveX components before installing the SecUp
CD this time, whereas I'd always visited WU before installing the SecUp CD
on previous occasions. This would point to the solution offered by oops!,
perhaps?

Anyway, I now have two scenarios to test, and I'll watch my LAN settings
while I'm at it.

Later.... Much, much later... (where;s my pipe!?)

GAry ... did you try these steps as suggested on the V4 Troubleshooter ?

Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic
configuration script." To do this:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and "Use
automatic configuration script" are not selected.
Try to access the Windows Update site again.

Also, verify that you can connect to SSL-enabled Web sites (sites that
start with https://). Most online retailers use SSL (Secure Socket
Layer) sites during the checkout/payment process. If you've connected to
one of these sites in the past then chances are that SSL is working
correctly on your computer. You can also test your ability to connect to
SSL sites using a SSL test site like this:

https://www.stanford.edu/group/idg/l...cure/test.html

If you cannot connect to SSL sites then the Windows Update scan will not
work. Make sure
that the SSL port (port 443) is open on your network.

Dumb question but, is the system's time set correctly ?
And, what does the Windows Update.log show ?

Gary,

Please note the workaround I proposed is specific to an error when upgrading
to IE6SP1 on WinME, and ONLY when an error message similar to "unable to
install all components" appears.

If this is one of the issues you are facing, do try the workaround.

Only Updates called for by WU that I can't locate as stand-alone installers
are two Recommended updates, the "IE Navigation Sound" update (for 98, 98SE
and ME) and the "MovieMaker Update" for ME. Any ideas?

See my reply to Mow. It would *appear* that the issue does indeed involve
component installation, since the one time I *didn't* visit WU and install
the ActiveX components *before* installing IE6, the scan worked OK. I'll be
testing further, and applying your workaround (and checking Mow's
suggestions) on a system where I visit WU before installing IE6.

OK, it did it again. I installed ME (clean install), then went to WU and
scanned for updates, installing all the components, then installed SecUp CD,
then went to WU... Scan sticks at 0%. Nothing ticked in LAN Settings, and
HTTPS/SSL works OK (though that link you gave me does not.)

Off to try the solution offered by oops!

Gary,

Is this the "Unable to install all components" issue?

If it is, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Gary,

As I tried to explain the workaround I posted is for a failed install of
IE6SP1 on WinME with an error message "unable to install all components".

And only that, not WU in general.

Sorry to read you still face the same problems.

That Mac page redirect is still occurring. Whether the problem is

to
mine (scan stuck at 0%), I don't know, but it only happens with

ME,

the Mac page thing happens on all 98, 98SE and ME. (I just keep
trying,
making sure to close all IE windows before next attempt.)

The Updates CD that MS put out in Feb 2004 is wholly

self-contained
and
does
not access the web directly. Only at the end are you offered some
follow-up
links.
Can that still be purchased and if so where?
