Security Updates CD and Windows Update
OK, now I have more testing to do! I installed ME, then the SecUp CD, then
went to WU and the scan succeeded! Only difference from before is that I *didn't* visit WU and install ActiveX components before installing the SecUp CD this time, whereas I'd always visited WU before installing the SecUp CD on previous occasions. This would point to the solution offered by oops!, perhaps? Anyway, I now have two scenarios to test, and I'll watch my LAN settings while I'm at it. Later.... Much, much later... Gary, Please note the workaround I proposed is specific to an error when upgrading to IE6SP1 on WinME, and ONLY when an error message similar to "unable to install all components" appears. See my reply to Mow. It would *appear* that the issue does indeed involve
component installation, since the one time I *didn't* visit WU and install the ActiveX components *before* installing IE6, the scan worked OK. I'll be testing further, and applying your workaround (and checking Mow's suggestions) on a system where I visit WU before installing IE6. -- Gary S. OK, it did it again. I installed ME (clean install), then went to WU and
scanned for updates, installing all the components, then installed SecUp CD, then went to WU... Scan sticks at 0%. My goof! Forgot to show all files after reinstalling ME! DOH!!!
But I don't think this will positively affect my problem with Windows Updates. Still the same problem -- I can get to WU, but the scan stalls at 0%. Gary,
As I tried to explain the workaround I posted is for a failed install of IE6SP1 on WinME with an error message "unable to install all components". And only that, not WU in general.
