Default Win ME hangs up oftenly duirng cold boot

Was running win SP2 (Upgrade from Me) but decided to return to WIn Me.
Uninstalled XP and PC went back Win ME. Installed all new upgrades foe Me and
Norton AV. Used the PC for a few minutes jut to kake sure everything was
running OK and shut it down, I tunr it up this morning and it hung up at the
Me screen for 3 minutes, I shut it down and re-start it and made it through
the system error check window and hung up again, I re-start it a 3rd time and
this time it made it all the way after doing the system error check routine.

Does any body know what could be causing this ?

Norton AV.

This says it all. The installation of NAV is incompatible with Win Me and
almost as bad on any other operating system. NAV together with LiveUpdate
are probably heavily implicated in your problems.

What do you suggest? Un-install Norton AV and replace it?

Uninstall, yes, replace/reinstall, never! Instead I would recommend that
you use some other AV application that not only works but also does its
job without crippling the system on which it is installed, or in the case
of Win Me, destroying the system. See this and other Win Me NGs for
examples of the many problems caused by Symantec/Norton products when
installed on Win Me..

There are many far better alternatives, some free, such as Avast (both
free and paid versions), eTrust (See
http://store.digitalriver.com/DRHM/S...PCtrialUS.html
for free offer of one year), AVG (free and paid versions, NOD32 and many
more. Check the NGs for comments.

Mike: Uninstalled NAV....Downloaded and Installed "avast"... PC is starting
up and shuting down easily without hic ups so far.... Did a full scan and
found no virus. Everything seems to work fine.
Thanks for the advice.

Jorge,

I'm glad to read that all is OK at the moment however there could still be
something else that was causing you your earlier problems with NAV just
compounding the problem. Please post back if you have further problems
with your system whether related to startup/shutdown or something entirely
different and someone will be only too happy to try and help.

Cheers,
