Missing Volume Control Icon in Tray
Hi everybody
I'm afraid I'm still struggling trying to get used to WinME after about 4 years on WinXP. Now I've lost my volume control icon in the tray. It was there up to yesterday but suddenly dissappeared. The strange thing is that it is still present, alive and well, in the desktop tray of the two other users of this machine. I've done all the usual stuff to try to retrieve it but so far, no luck. Here's what I've done: 1. Show Volume Control Icon box IS checked in Control PanelSounds and MultimediaGeneral 2. The Volume Control box is also checked in Control PanelAdd/Remove ProgramsWindows SetUpMultimedia 3. My ComputerPropertiesDevice Manager IN SAFE MODE and deleted everything to do with sound in Sounds/Games/Multimedia and then rebooted. However, it does seem unlikely that the problem is caused by a corrupted system file as all users employ the same system files; so why would the icon just not show on MY tray? I should also mention that the volume icon did show up briefly after a reboot today but was gone again after the next, and subsequent, reboots. Can anybody explain this and how to get back to normal? TIA Paul |

Missing Volume Control Icon in Tray
Hi Mike
Thanks for your reply. However, I've done what you suggested without the hoped-for result. Actually, I should mention that I had forgotten to note in my first post that, although the "Show volume icon" box is checked in My ComputerPropertiesGeneral Tab, it is grayed out as is the volume control slider. I have done a rather crude workaround by creating a new user account to which I will transfer all of my icons, favorites and other good stuff. This new desktop has got the volume control icon in the tray. However, I really would like to know what has happened here. If you have any thoughts, pass them along. I'll try anything within reason to get to the bottom of this TIA Paul |
