Default newbie question re software upgrade

When I download a newer version of my antivirus, can I
save it to the same place as the original, older version,
or do I need to create a new folder and save it there?
BTW--I do understand that I need to UNinstall the old one
before installing the new, but I have never
upgraded/replaced my antivirus before. Thank you for your
suggestions.

I rather suspected it might be....
save the download to the desktop, and run it from there - it will uninstall
the old version itself, and then install - it worked fine for me (in XP -
haven't got it in ME)

Just wanted to say thank you, Noel Paton, for your advice
on this matter. The install went very smoothly, and after
a reboot I was still able to update, scan, and
send/receive email.

Thanks for the confirmation, Joan (I really must get my protected VM back up
and functional!)
