Work Offline Screen appears when deleting files
Whenever I go to delete a file in Windows Explorer, a
screen comes up which reads: "Work Offline No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work Offline. Click Try Again to attempt to connect Work Offline Try Again" Normally, I just click on the X in the right hand corner of the window (to make it go away), and then I am allowed to delete the file. I AM offline when I get the above message, and do not understand why this annoying screen keeps popping up. What is going on? |

What folder are you deleting the file from? I don't know, maybe...
(1) Undo Active Desktop. (a) R-Clk the Desktop, point to Active Desktop, & select Customize my Desktop. (b) Uncheck "View my Active Desktop as a WEB page" & Apply. Is there anything in the box under that item? Those are WEB sites that would appear on the Desktop. Delete them. (c) At the Effects tab, uncheck "Hide icons when the Desktop is viewed as a WEB page" & OK. (d) R-Clk the Desktop, & uncheck "View as WEB page". (2) "START, Settings, Folder Options, General tab". Set to "Classic style". If all gets better, click "Custom...", & gingerly go back to how you like it. But stay away from "Enable all Web related content...". -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "S.M. What folder am I deleting the file from? -- Any folder,
any file on the hard drive. I tried your various remedies and discovered I cannot have wallpaper if I revert to Undo Active Destop and/or Enable all Web related content on my desktop. I didn't find any humor in your post (nor mine). I am serious about this problem, and would really appreciate a way to resolve it. My computer only began doing this a few months ago. [No, I do not remember what programs I have added or deleted over the past several months, nor the exact moment I first noticed the "Work Offline" message whenever I attempted to delete a file while in Windows Explorer.] Thanks! -----Original Message----- What folder are you deleting the file from? Thanks! Interesting ideas. I have, and run, Spybot
Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. Both programs are showing my computer is clean. I also checked (using Find) for Logit.txt -- no such file exists on my computer. I really think it is unlikely that I have a browser helper object (BHO) on my computer. But, thanks for your help anyway. -----Original Message----- Yow, any file. Better check for a BHO... http://www.definitivesolutions.com/ BHODemon This one was free last I knew. It renames the BHO executable & can "undo" that.. "BHOCop" removes a BHO's Registry entries & can "undo" that. It found a Browser Helper Object called Wavehelper Class, created by "Wavetop", that was building a monstrosity of an error log called "Logit.txt" in here. "START button, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one? http://www.pcmag.com/ Has many, many great utilities: BHOCop, COA2, ContextEdit, Crackup, DiskAction, EndItAll2, Folders, HDValet, InCtrl5, ListZapper, RegDetective, RegEdit+, StartupCop, WinTidy, etc. Now, suddenly, there is a subscription fee at PCMag, but, it's worth it, especially if you can get the whole bundle that is there. ..........Start.................. Yearly billing $19.97 Yearly billing (For PC Magazine subscribers) $14.97 Monthly billing (limit 3 downloads/month) $4.97 ..........End................... You are welcome. Right, SpyBot & possibly AdAware can also detect a BHO.
Hmm, well, update defs & do a virus scan, and... (1) Look around for other settings to play with with. Perhaps... "Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab", & bolt "Never dial a connection". (2) It doesn't make any sense, but Colorado once cured an Explorer problem of some sort by extracting a fresh copy of Explorer.exe. (Possibly it holds some settings inside itself.) Explorer.exe has never been updated, despite all the cumulative IE critical updates that have come/gone. Therefore, it is at least harmless to do this. Do you know how? (3) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool" It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is indicated. (4) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c). (a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab & disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot. (b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from top, & skip it next time. (c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window. NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable. (d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot. (e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers criticals. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "S.M.
