Default switching from 100-T to Gigabit

My boss wants to switch our peer-to-peer network from 100 base-T to
Ethernet. Is this just a matter of upgrading the NICs and Hub? We have Cat
5 cable.

I'm wondering how much improvement we'll see in speed if we don't do any
other computer upgrades except the NICs. Is there a utility I can use to
see the current speed? I thought I could get a baseline while everyone's at
lunch and no one except me on the network.

Thanks in advance
Marcie
