vmm32.vxd missing!!!
Can anyone please help me??? When I start my computer I
get "the following file is missing or corrupted: C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd. Type the name of the Windows loader. Its actually my fault; every time I started Windows i got a fatal exception concerning this file, and thinking it was something I just got from the latest update I sent it to the recycle bin (I seem to do this a lot with updated stuff). So now I know where the file is, i just can't type the correct pathname for it, or I guess Windows won't use it if its in the recycle bin. My ME came pre- loaded, and I didn't get any disks, so I've got nothing to help my but the website. Which is not saying much. Anyone have the file so i can somehow get it onto my computer and use it to boot up? Once its running I can get mine back from the recycle bin... You can mail me at akfsnut "at" yahoo.com.hk - PLEASE!! Thanks for reading, Souxie |

See if this helps courtesy of MikeM.
Joan VMM32.VXD is a composite file that is built from thirty or more other files when Win Me is installed and differs from system to system depending upon the hardware in use. If you boot to DOS using a floppy can you see if you have the file vmm32.vxd in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder? If not then you may well have to reinstall Win Me. One way you can check whether vmm32.vxd is missing or not is by typing the following at the A:\ prompt: A:\ DIR C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD If present you should see something like: VMM32 VXD 1,032,968 15/08/00 14:34 VMM32.VXD (Don't worry about the details, your date and size will most likely be different) but if absent you will see: File Not Found If the file is still present, and I hope it is, see MS KB258471 - "Error Message: The Following File Is Missing or Corrupted: C:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=258471) which explains how to proceed to hopefully fix the problem. Once you've fixed your system you might then want to amend the default settings for the Registry Checker so that it backs up a copy of vmm32.vxd each time that it backs up the registry which might save a lot of anguish in future. Do this by looking for the file scanreg.ini in your Windows folder and adding the line Files=11,vmm32.vxd beneath the last line of the file. The Registry Checker will then create a daily backup copy of vmm32.vxd as well as the registry and the backups are stored in the rb00?.cab files in the windows\SysBckup folder. For more details see MS KB 183603 - "How to Customize Registry Checker Tool Settings" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=183603). Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I forgot to mention
that my ME came OEM and I do not have any disks for it. I cannot boot Windows at all, and unless I can answer that one question and tell it where to find the windows loader, it seems that's all my laptop will ever be able to display. It seems the only way to boot the damned thing is to get hold of an ME disk - anyone got one they think I'd be able to use? I'm getting desperate - I just want to start the thing and save my stuff off it, then I'm junking it for an Apple. (p.s. I've had this for 3 years now and never needed an ME disk before. Have I been lucky or the exception to a rule?) Thanks in advance for any advice... Souxie -----Original Message----- See if this helps courtesy of MikeM. You don't need a Win Me CD to boot to DOS, only a bootable floppy.
What do you see when you type the following at the DOS prompt? DIR C:\VMM32.VXD /S Until you do so and tell us what you see there is little point in posting further advice. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Souxie wrote: Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I forgot to mention that my ME came OEM and I do not have any disks for it. Did you try booting the machine with a boot floppy as suggested and
following the advise. Alternatively you can download the image of a Win Me boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com to your desktop and then double clicking on the file containing the image and following the instructions to transfer the image to a floppy disk. OK, sorry, full story:
About 30 seconds after turning on my laptop I get the message: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD) C I typed in as you suggested, it says: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\VMM32.VXD Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD) C I wasn't sure what you meant, so I also tried CDIR C:\VMM32.VXD /S and many other combinations, but with the same result. It seems whatever is put in, it repeats the same message, just substitutes what you entered as the missing file name. Also, I have no floppy drive, only a CD reader. Sorry for driving you mad, I'm not good at this! Thanks for all your help and attention, Souxie -----Original Message----- You don't need a Win Me CD to boot to DOS, only a bootable floppy. If VMM32.VXD is truly missing you probably have little alternative other
than to reinstall Win Me as this file is a special composite file that is built from many others when Win Me was first installed and its actual composition varies from PC to PC depending on the hardware and certain other options specified at the time of installation. Not having a floppy drive and a bootable floppy makes further work to try and recover this file difficult if not impossible. Since you deleted vmm32.vxd whilst Win Me was running you should be able to restore your PC to a working state by running system restore however since doing this requires you to boot to DOS using a floppy however this is not available to you. If you were by any chance to have a bootable CD that enables you to get to a working DOS prompt post back and I will give you details of how to proceed but otherwise there is nothing more I can do than wish you luck and to hope that reinstalling Win Me goes without causing you too many problems. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Souxie wrote: OK, sorry, full story: About 30 seconds after turning on my laptop I get the message: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD) I typed in as you suggested, it says: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\VMM32.VXD Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD) I wasn't sure what you meant, so I also tried DIR C:\VMM32.VXD /S and many other combinations, but with the same result.
