USB Drive for Win 98 SE ?
My new HP USB flash drive, model v125w (version unknown, 2 or 3,HP does'nt
know or support) works well on main XP computer, but am having difficulties with drivers for 98SE supplied at http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php. They're not making it possible for system to recognize the drive. BIOS of my backup 98se box shows board supports usb v.2, so i'm guessing that there's a way to make the flash drive functional. Has anyone here had experience with these or other drivers that work with flash drive, either version 2 or 3? -- RobF |

Then when you insert your flash drive, Windows will detect it and give you the option to find the driver. Choose to have it look in the folder where you unzipped the downloaded files, and it will see the ..inf file there and install your flash drive. You can use this same .inf file to install other flash drives and USB mass storage, so save the .zip file somewhere safe and store the .inf file in a permanent location of your choice. I use the hidden Windows\Inf\Other folder, but you can use whatever you like. = = = it might work for you. |

RobF: According to the HP site that drive has a capacity of 8 Gig which means it almost certainly is formatted with an NTFS file system which Win 98 will not "see". You can verify this by plugging the flash drive into your XP computer, point to it in Windows Explorer (or "My Computer") right click on it and choose properties. The "General" tab will tell you which file system is installed. While there may be third party patches to get Win98 to use NTFS I have no idea if they would work with an already patched USB function HTH & GL John -- \\\||/// ------------------o000----(o)(o)----000o---------------- ----------------------------()-------------------------- '' Madness takes its toll - Please have exact change. But I learned the hard way, under no circumstances *EVER* reformat a USB flash drive in FAT32 using WinXP if you're planning on trying to use the flash drive on Win98. Instead, use Win98 |

Nearly all flash drives are formatted FAT32. That file system would have no trouble at all with an 8GB partition. You can verify this by plugging the flash drive into your XP computer, point to it in Windows Explorer (or "My Computer") right click on it and choose properties. The "General" tab will tell you which file system is installed. Yes, definitely check that. -- Tim Slattery http://members.cox.net/slatteryt |

According to the HP site that drive has a capacity of 8 Gig which means it almost certainly is formatted with an NTFS file system which Win 98 will not "see". Why would you think that FAT32 would either be inappropriate or incompatible with a drive/volume size of 8 gb? In fact, journalling file systems (such as NTFS) are seen largely as poor choices for flash-memory drives, because of the finite read/write cycle lifespan of that type of memory - and the somewhat "busy" nature of NTFS. While there may be third party patches to get Win98 to use NTFS I have no idea if they would work with an already patched USB function The claimed benefits of NTFS over FAT32 are largely ficticious or bogus. The main goal that Microsoft had in mind for NTFS is a file-system that was not accessible if a system was booted into a command-line (DOS-like) operating system. Most of the other advantages of NTFS have been replaced by advances in drive hardware (real-time bad-sector remapping). Which is why I install OS's like XP to drives pre-formatted with FAT32 when I have the chance. Much more open, accessible, and repairable compared to NTFS. |
