Where Did The SR Points Go?
Every once in a while I take a look at the Restore points that have been
made, usually before I make a new one. Today, for example, I took a look and there were none--Because I have ME and Avast every once in a while I make my own SR points so I know that there should have been some. Why did they disappear? MLD |

Lots of possible reasons including using certain 3rd party system "cleaners", allocating less space to the archive than required to store copies of all the files that have been either changed or deleted since your last checkpoint, having less than 300MB or so free space on the drive containing the windows folder, changing the fixed partition layout - either by adding another hard disk or repartitioning an existing drive. -- Mike Maltby |

I'll take much more frequent looks at the SR calendar and see if I can correlate when and if the new points disappear. Ques: Would SR points remain in the calendar infinitem if no further points are made to chase them out (assuming that there is no space limitation)? MLD |

MLD Yes and no, not that I would recommend that anyone use a checkpoint older than a week or so. Win Me, unlike XP, does not automatically expire older checkpoints, XP expires checkpoints after I think 31 days regardless of available free space. so provided that the space required to store copies of original and edited files is infinite, and such storage has yet to be invented, then Win Me won't expire checkpoints. However since infinitely large drives have yet to be invented a time will come when the space required to store archived files will exceed the space allocated to the archive and at the point the state manager will reset system restore and flush the folder. -- Mike Maltby |

Mike, FWIW and FYI my XP Home box SR points go back to mid February with some 70+ SR dates (some with multiple SR points). That's on an 80G HDD set to 12%. and about 60% free space. I find that with XP being so stable, I very rarely need to use SR, so just let it 'look after itself'. Never had need to look that far back before g The 'over one week' checkpoint disclaimer accepted of course. Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... XP's system restore by default expires checkpoints after 90 days regardless of the amount of free space or the space allocated to the archive. This is user configurable and controlled by the data for the value RPLifeInterval (in seconds) found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore Sorry about that - I'd hoped no-one would check and save me the trouble of looking up the details. vbg -- Mike |
