How to get out of this fatal exception error
hi everyone
my son has a win98se machine with an S3 video card. because of other problems that i could not overcome, I installed from scratch ie I fdisk'd & installed from new and all went ok. the s3 video card was detected just a std vga adapter which I half expected. I used the latest set of drivers I had - which also seem to be the latest set for this particular card anywhere(including the 'net). During the install, because I wanted to avoid installing any of the "additional bits" like direct X (for the moment) I took different options which later on I think caused the install not to function as smoothly as it should. Since then I have had fatal exception errors in VX VMM (06) even after I have de-installed the S3 drivers and gone back to a std vga. So this looks as if the S3 virtual drivers are still hanging around somewhere and I need to get rid of them. I intend trawling the registry (suitably backed up of course) and removing any S3 entries and deleting any drivers left lying around the disk. Having then got back to a stable VGA do I intend installing the drivers again but this time I'll let them go on their way and install the stuff the routines want to. Anyone have any other words of advice or short cuts? -- Brush-Head "The meek shall inherit the earth, but not the mineral rights" John Paul Getty 1892 - 1976 |

Your plan seems sound to me. You might want to consider restoring a copy of
the registry that existed before you loaded the S3 drivers. That ought to get rid of what you want without manually searching the registry. Note that anything installed since the drivers will also have to be reinstalled. If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the registry that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps. The five-day limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it is not booted every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that you can use even though more than five days have elapsed. On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Once the registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry that you wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has already been replaced. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "brush-head" wrote in message ... hi everyone my son has a win98se machine with an S3 video card. because of other problems that i could not overcome, I installed from scratch ie I fdisk'd & installed from new and all went ok. the s3 video card was detected just a std vga adapter which I half expected. Thanks Ron
I think I've now resolved it (10 warm reboots 100 cold and no errors at all). It does make you realise how good 2000 & XP are not having had to dabble too much recently with 98.
