Default No Sound after windows update

I downloaded microsoft updates 5/23/04(C_Media Multimedia
Software update, (update was released 3/26/03, my system
was in storage for months) since then I have
had no sound card. I have spent the past 4 days trying
to research this thru Microsoft, but no solution has been
found.
What has microsoft done about this yet? This Critical
update was sent out over a year ago.

My system is telling me that "Line-in and rear speaker
output share the same jack. Once in awhile I hear sound
from the back of my hard drive while playing game on
desktop but that's it.

"Bad Direct Sound Driver"
and, "Cannot playback the audio, hardware is not
available, error-80040255"

I've tried to download the PCI Multimedia Audio Device,
(file has black exclamation point on a yellow field) from
windows and it won't let me

Anyone have any ideas? Please, Please!! e-mail me if
someone has the solution already.

Thank you, Thank you in advance
