Default Win98SE and HP Lj4mPlus problem please help

Hi,

I am trying to print on HP Laserjet 4m plus and the system runs
Win98SE.

I used to have Epson 500 on that machine but it fell apart, so
I know LP1 is not busted.

HP used to run on my other machine, XP, so I know it is not
busted and both cables I have are OK.

I have MS drivers for whole range of 4 and 4m printers inside
Win98SE CD and I tried most of them. Everything installs
normally. No problems in System Manager. I tried most
variations of settings, in 98 and in HP. Tried EU drivers from
HP.

Still, the bloody thing just sits there with "Ready" smiling at
me while 98 spool says 0 bits being processed. And after a
while I get printer port timeout message.

Not even a test page would print.

When option "Print directly to printer" is chosen the system
hangs.

I know HP is almost obsolete but it still works flawlessly with
XP. But now I need it desperately on my old 98 while my XP is
being repaired.

Please help.

Thanks

What settings do you have for the LPT port in the BIOS?
