WinXP Pro Laptop crashes Win98 Desktop--help!
Any ideas from you guys?
My new IBM laptop with WinXP Pro is networked through a wireless Linksys router to my Desktop running Win98. The desktop connects to the router via ethernet cable. I can see each computer from the other, and I can access the internet from either--no problem there. The problem is that most of the time, with the desktop running, when I start the laptop and see the laptop connect to the network (ibm system tray message), the desktop gives me the blue screen with the following "fatal exception 0E 0028: EDA #######..." I often get the same blue screen on the desktop when I place the laptop in standyby (close the cover). The problem persists regardless of what program I'm running on the Win98 desktop. I've even tried closing all running programs on the desktop except explorer and systray, but it will still crash most of the time when the laptop enters or leaves the network. Please help!! |

Unfortuantely you became a bit lazy with an important factor in your post:
the rest of the error message. siince the numbers/info which would fill in the ### can vary... Here are two MS KBs which might help: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;189655 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315854 which should lead you to http://support.microsoft.com/common/...s-kb&lcid=1033 "kimberlyc" wrote in message m... Thanks for your reply; however, I've done the basic research including
all MS support references to fatal exception 0Es. I cannot find any references to the "EDA" fatal exception prefix anywhere. Here are the specifics: When the WinXP laptop enters or leaves the network, about 75% of the time, I will immediately get one of the following lines with the blue screen on the Win98 desktop, followed by "this application will be closed" and no other numbers: Fatal Exception 0E 0028: EDA6CDA7, or EDA3BDB0, or EDA3BDA5, or EDA7BDB4, or EDA3BDAD. Sometime after getting the blue screen and pressing any key, I'll get my desktop back. I then do a CAD to see what programs are running and compare that to what was running before the crash and I can see no program missing. If I get my desktop back, in every case, the system will be unstable and always hang on restart or shutdown, requiring hard restart. I have Norton AV and ZoneAlarm, and I can duplicate this problem with them running, disabled or uninstalled. My system is virus and adware/spyware clean. As I mentioned in my original post, I can duplicate the problem with nothing running except explorer and systray. My Linksys router is WRT54GS. Any ideas? "Alphonse" wrote in message ... For anyone else with this problem, this fix appears to have worked:
Disable the Browse Master in File and Print Sharing for MS Networks on the Win98 system. Thanks to Steve Winograd's post on this group re Networking XP Pro and Win 98SE: "... 1. Disable and re-enable File and Printer Sharing on 98. 2. Make sure that a firewall program on 98 isn't blocking access. 3. Disable Browse Master on 98...." |
