Default DirectX9.0c update hosed win98SE install - Help!

I made a stupid mistake today on my old Win98 SE PC. I allowed
Windows Update to upgrade DirectX to version 9.0c, and I did not do a
backup first.

Now when the computer starts up, everything looks fine, I log in with
my user name and password, the start bar on the bottom of the screen
displays then disappears. I cannot run anything because there is no
way to start it. No menu, No shell, No Icons, No Taskbar - just a
blank blue screen. The same thing occurs when booting in Safe Mode.

I can see the 98 PC from my XP PC, and can access the drives, so
everything appears to be working except the main shell "explorer?".

Anyone have any suggestions how I can solve this problem?

For example:
1. Any way to somehow stuff the DirectX 9.0c uninstall into the start?
2. Any way to replace the shell with something else?

Should I just reinstall Windows 98SE? (will this even help?)

Are there command line options to perform an inplace repair of 98SE
(which was an upgrade to 98)?
Thanks in advance for your support.

Hello bntznrloswxv (please dont make me type that again)_
I thank god for your post as I was on the cusp of actually nearly
installing it onto my computer too.
I am truely sorry for all of the problems you are having, I mean
that most sincerly, but at the same time I am counting my
blessings that it is the one thing I didnt do that this group advised me
was ok to do.

Gary and others will be along to assist you to restore, I have so much faith
in the guys here and am sure you will be up and running
in a normal fashion soon.

{Phew, and to think I was going to compromise my computer for
the sake of a kids game.}

regards Jane

I will let the experts answer your post but one warning: Do Not Reinstall
Windows without first formatting and then doing a clean install because with
just an install over the current configuration you risk file problems by
having newer and older files not work well with each and cause many problems.
I am sure there are solutions that you can take to help fix your system
before considering a format.

Follow the procedures he
Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install Internet
Explorer:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;249191

If those procedures do not help, have a look he
Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98:
http://www.cs.bsu.edu/~gjjones/admin...nd ows98.html
or
http://tinyurl.com/r5ba

Especially this section at the end:

"If you still have boot problems after you reboot, you should use the command prompt
to edit the c:\windows\system.ini file. On the command line type edit
c:\windows\system.ini.

"Once it is open, change the line shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. What you
are doing here is changing the default shell (that is having problems) from the
Windows Explorer to the old Windows Program Manager shell.

"Reboot Windows. It should now successfully boot with no errors into an empty
Program Manager shell. Use the File | Run | Browse drop down menu selection to
browse to c:\program files\internet explorer and launch ie5setup.exe or ie6setup.exe
(depending on what is there). Do a custom install and check all the Bold faced
options. When the setup program alerts you that these files are already installed,
tell it to reinstall all of the files.

"When the Internet Explorer Setup program is done and reboots, hit the F8 key to
bring up a Boot Menu. Choose Command Prompt and boot to the command prompt. Once
there, type edit c:\windows\system.ini and, once it is open, change the line
shell=progman.exe back to shell=explorer.exe. Save and exit the file. You have now
set the shell back to the original value."

Normally, it is, if the word normal can be bandied about with impunity
in a newsgroup such as this one.

There is nothing to fear from DirectX9.0c per se.

Glen,

So you think this will work even though I was not attempting to
reinstall IE 6? I was just letting windows update upgrade DirectX to
version 9.0c?

Also, the MS article #249191 suggests replacing explorer.exe with
winfile.exe. Do you think progman.exe is better than using winfile?
Thanks!

Either shell will do - it's just a question of which is simpler for the
specific task you need to do. You can start PROGMAN from WINFILE, and vice
versa.

Use whatever you feel more comfy with, as Jeff suggests. And yes, the error
indicates to me that Internet Explorer was damaged...it is integrated into the
Explorer shell.

I never let WinUP site update the big files like MSJava, Media Player,
or DirectX. I prefer to go to the 'home' MS page for the product if
possible and download the redistributable version which can then be
installed offline. If you had done this then you would have it on your
machine already and could simply reinstall it with Progman's Run box
hopefully. And hopefully that would fix you right up. At least that's
how I like to think it would happen.

34meg for 9.0c redistributable, with a file that large, I've no advise
for you that wouldn't be a massive hassle, sorry.
