Default "Show Desktop" - HOW?

Is there a way to add a "Show Desktop" shortcut icon in the taskbar? If so,
how?

I can't think of one : but right click anywhere on the taskbar will give a
"show desktop" option

The file is Show Desktop.scf which should
be in the Quick Lanch folder. It may have benn removed accidently to some
other folder.
Search for it and place it in the QL folder.
The right place for the folder is:-

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show
Desktop.scf

In the Windows\System folder you should see a Show Desktop file.
Right click it and send it to the desktop as a shortcut then drag it
into the Quick Launch Bar. Not the Systray where the clock is or the
one that shows what files are open but the other one, usually to the
right of the Start Button. To see the desktop just click on it.

If you have a problem with that see this article:
How to Re-create the Show Desktop Icon on Quick Launch Toolbar
