Nero Express 6
I installed a CD burner (Sony CRX230AD) which included Nero Express 6. The
burner works but any of the diagnostics in Nero are very very slow. It takes about five minutes to detect drive speed. I'm running WinME, 128M memory, 20G HD w/14G free, 700MHz P3. Is the software, Nere Express 6, too much for the system? If so, is there other (preferrably free) software that would be better? I appreciate any thoughts/recommendations. KB |

KB Nero is very bloated but it's fairly decent at doing it's job of burning in my opinion. If it's just testing the drive speed that is your issue then it could be that you just need to not test your drive speed with that application. (Burning is the best way to see the results anyhow.) There's a program, X-Setup, that you can get which actually has a tweak in it that will enable you to see the actual burning speed of the drive. It's rather neat. http://www.x-setup.net is the address and there's the older (and last) free model available on there somewhere and there's a newer version (basically quite the same) which also has that plug-in available on there for $8 USD. If it turns out that your system can't handle Nero then something here might suit your needs, I can't speak on behalf of any of them as I've become acclimated to Nero and that's generally all I use unless it's a specialized burn. Hi, Jack.
Not running compatibility mode. Swap file commonly 70M. I did some searching for memory. How do I tell what type I need? I was at a big box store and they offered 128M for $100 but couldn't tell me which I needed basis my system model, VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C694X. The typical 'bring in the box and we can do it' was what I was told. They didn't appreciate my response. Appreciate your feedback! KB "Jack E Martinelli" wrote in message ... Agree, it burned well. I could care less what the speed is but would like
to 'play' with the new toy without the delay. I love your note that "my opinion. If it's just testing the drive speed that is your issue then it could be that you just need to not test your drive speed" When I tell my doctor, "It hurts when I go like this", he says, "Don't go like that anymore". I'm on the hunt for memory right now as with 128M my swapfile commonly runs at 70M. Thanks, Galen. KB "Galen" wrote in message ... It's very good that the box is not in "compatibility mode", as that can be
difficult to resolve. $100.00 for 128 MB is unconscionable today! $20 is a fair price, for 128 MB of PC100/133 SDRAM. DIMM's will be a little more. The best way is to pull the memory and have someone knowledgeable examine it. Compare NewEgg.com, TigerDirect.com, and pricewatch.com. Be sure you understand the return policy fully before proceeding. In my area near Boston, I can always find very inexpensive memory at one or more of the big box retailers, although I might have to wait a week for the best "after rebate" price. Your "VT82C694X" reference is to VIA's Apollo Pro 133A (VT82C694X) chipset. Many mainboard vendors will have used that chipset. Tom Pabst's Hardware Guide reports that it supports PC100 and 133 sdram. So a physical examination is necessary if you wish to match the currently installed module/s. -- Jack E. I installed a CD burner (Sony CRX230AD) which included Nero Express 6. The burner works but any of the diagnostics in Nero are very very slow. It takes about five minutes to detect drive speed. I'm running WinME, 128M memory, 20G HD w/14G free, 700MHz P3. Is the software, Nero Express 6, too much for the system? If so, is there other (preferrably free) software that would be better? I appreciate any thoughts/recommendations. KB |
