System Tray
Can someone explain to me "in plain english" exactly what
the system tray is? and does it have to be in my start up? What will happen if it's disabled? Thank You Beau |

Whilst not essential systray.exe needs to be running if the user wishes to
display the volume control and certain other system icons alongside the clock on the task bar. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Beau wrote: Can someone explain to me "in plain english" exactly what the system tray is? and does it have to be in my start up? What will happen if it's disabled? Thank You Beau |

MS don't seem to be very helpful with this but if you look at KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;310578 and read the very first sentence of the Summary :- "Systray.exe is a tool for system taskbar notifications." Then that 'pretty much' explains it! You could also try a google for systray e.g. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsys.htm http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/de...on.php?systray I suppose you could try dissabling it yourself and see what happens - BUT BE SURE TO SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT FIRST. Just in case g Mart "Beau" wrote in message ... Can someone explain to me "in plain english" exactly what the system tray is? and does it have to be in my start up? What will happen if it's disabled? AHA! Once again Thanks Mike. Screw the volume control!
Well I unchecked every single box in my startup including Task Monitor and scan registry! Mistake?? Anyway the next time I ran msconfig a box popped up saying "System Configuration Utility" Environment variables were found in the legacy files AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS and the variables were moved to the Windows Registry. Is that bad?? LOL! What Variables?? It then let me go into my start up so I can recheck any of the boxes (which I haven't yet) But did I mess up my registry? hmmmmm Beau -----Original Message----- Whilst not essential systray.exe needs to be running if the user wishes to display the volume control and certain other system icons alongside the clock on the task bar. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Beau wrote: Can someone explain to me "in plain english" exactly what the system tray is? and does it have to be in my start up? Well I unchecked every single box in my startup including
Task Monitor and scan registry! Mistake?? Yes. Very much so. Microsoft didn't place those entries there without a reason and no entry should be deleted or unchecked without full knowledge of the consequences of so doing. Anyway the next time I ran msconfig a box popped up saying "System Configuration Utility" Environment variables were found in the legacy files AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS and the variables were moved to the Windows Registry. Is that bad?? No. Of no consequence whatsoever! What Variables?? It's your system so why are you asking me? vbg See MS KB262786 - "Message Received When You Start the System Configuration Utility: "Environment Variables Were Moved to Windows Registry"" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=262786). It then let me go into my start up so I can recheck any of the boxes (which I haven't yet) This message will continue to be displayed each time you boot your system if you have unchecked entries in MSConfig. If you don't want to see the message check the box not to display it again and it will go away until you next make a change in MSConfig. But did I mess up my registry? hmmmmm I doubt it but I really feel you need to be fully aware of the consequences of unchecking some of those entries. For example unchecking the *StateMgr entry would mean you no longer have system restore available or benefit from Win Me's system file protection. Likewise unchecking the scanregw entry would mean that your registry is not backed up daily. For help in determining which entries in MSConfig are essential see Pacman's list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. Note also that rather then deleting some entries the entry should be removed by amending the preferences or configuration for the application concerned. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Beau wrote: AHA!
