Default GW software synth & MIDI mapper - how do these get installed?

Hi!

I've got a problem w/ my computer not being able to make sound happen when
playing MIDI files. I suspect the difficulty is related to an absence of the
MS GW software synthesizer & MIDI mapper on my computer. How do these
usually get installed into a computer? I mean, where do they come from?
After-market software? The OS CD? Sound drivers?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide to me regarding this.
