Default Paint and Jpegs

I have just reinstalled Windows 98SE on a computer and I am unable to open
jpegs in paint and in paint I do not have the option to save it as a jpeg.
When I open a jpeg, I can view the picture but it will come up in IE instead.
I did some searches in the knowledgebase and the only thing I found was
about office being installed. I do not have office installed but I do have a
program called openoffice. In the article it said about a registry fix
however the setting is not in my registry. I have tried removing paint and
reinstalling to no avail.

As you have found already, Paint does not handle jpeg without filters
normally supplied by MS Office or similar.

You may have read these already....
MSPaint-graphics

Some Office 2000 graphics filters are not available in Paint

Some Office Graphics Filters Are Not Available in Microsoft Paint
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298580/EN-US/
You May Be Unable to Save .jpg Files with Microsoft Paint After You
Install Office 2000 SR1 or SP2

I doubt that openoffice would use the same filters and there is no
Registry fix that can substitute for the filters you presumably do not
have.

You can probably get filters and install them but it would be simpler
to get a graphics program that can handle jpegs.
Change your viewer to something better like IrfanView - Freeware

Thank you for your answer. I thought that was the case but my wife insisted
that she was able to open and save jpegs without another program hence why I
posted this

What more can I say?
She must have had the filters installed by some program like MS Office
or similar. Paint will not open and save jpegs without those filters.
