Default Scan Disk/Defraging

Just recently when I run Scandisk or try Defraging my
computer it freezes up on me. With the scandisk it goes
for about five minutes, then freezes. With the defraging
it will go to about 10% and the same thing happens.
Everything just freezes up and I have to reboot my comp.
This is very frustrating so if anyone out there knows how
to fix the problem, please help me out. I haven't had my
comp defraged for about 3 weeks or more. I am running
windows 98 SE. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Default Scan Disk/Defraging

I am not a technician representing Microsoft, but I can
share what I do.
Before I attempt to scandisk I turnoff the virus
program. In my case with the 98SE I have PC-cillin
2004. I right click the ICON and Exit.
If that does not help I check the files for corruption.
StartHelptype corrupt in the box and follow directions.

Defragmentation I Click StartRunEnterMSCONFIGOK
Startup. Copy all items that are checked. When finished
uncheck all items and reboot. Try to defrag.

Patience is the name of the game!

When scandisk seems to stall it often means it has encountered a bad =
cluster ( bad sector ) on the hard disk. This it will try to repair and =
the process can take quite a time to complete. If this is what is =
happening then the only way forward is to be extremely patient. You may =
find it prudent to back up your more important data.

Remember if it completes a repair then you may have further bad clusters =
the next time you run scandisk. Indeed you would be wise to run it again =
a day or so later and keep repeating the process until no further bad =
clusters are found. If you are still bad clusters after 10 days replace =
the hard disk!

I suggest that you remove Temporary Internet Files ( including Offline =
Content ) and History. Start Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, =
General, Temporary Internet Files, Delete Files, check Offline Content =
and click on OK. Also empty your Recycle Bin. This helps remove a =
potential problem when running Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.
