Default Restoring the Registry in ME--Must One Boot into DOS?

Hi:

I know how to back up the registry in Windows ME and where the compressed
file backups are located.

I'm not clear as to how the registry is restored if something should go
wrong in editing or cleaning it.

Does one need to use the Startup Disk and boot into DOS or is it something
simpler?

Thanks in advance:

-Eli

It depends on whether you can boot into Win Me or not. If not, you will
have to boot to DOS from a floppy and then use SCANREG /RESTORE however if
you can boot into Win Me then scanreg /restore can be run either by
entering scanreg /restore in the Start | Run box and clicking OK or by
running scanreg /restore from the prompt in a DOS window after which the
system will reboot and restart using the backed up copy of the registry
you have restored.

I've just had to restore a previous registry on my own OEM version of ME at
home to get past a Windows protection error during start-up.

"scanreg /restore" can be run from a DOS prompt under Windows or from the
START - RUN command window.
I think you need to be in safe mode for this to work.

If you still have your ME installation disk you should be able to use it to
boot directly into DOS, bypassing Windows completely. When in DOS type in
"cd c:\Windows" then "scanreg /restore"

You should then have a list of 5 registry backups. Choose the most recent
marked as "started" and your computer should then restart.
There is an option somewhere to tell Windows how many registry backups to
keep but I can't remember where it is. The default is 5.

Thanks

I remeber there was a DOS prompt icon right above the Start, but there was
an option to hide it. I had it hidden and now I'd like that DOS prompt back
in case I might need it.

Anyone know how?

Not sure I still have that installation disk, but I do have the ME startup
disk

Thanks again:
-Eli

You don't need the Win Me CD. Just a boot floppy and only then if you
can't boot to Win Me..

As I indicated in my post you can use scanreg /restore when Win Me is
running either:
a) By using Start | Run and entering scanreg /restore in the box and
clicking OK, or,
b) By opening a DOS window (Start | Programs | Accessories | MS DOS
Prompt) and entering scanreg /restore at the DOS prompt.

As for restoring the Run entry to the Start menu you can use Start |
Settings | Taskbar and Start Menu | Advanced and checking "Display Run" in
the section headed "Start menu and Taskbar".

Eli, you can also manually save your registry contents by starting regit,
click file then
export registry, put a check the "all" box, click save and enter a
destination folder (and filename if you want).

Correction......go to Start/Run and type in "regedit"......not 'regit'.

If you are going to give advice, then make sure you know how to spell!!
