Default startup problems

I'm having real problems trying to startup. During boot sequence, at veifying
DMI pool data I get the message windows is bypassing your startup files, and
it then goes into safe mode. this is really useless because I can't get into
troubleshooting menu to see what's wrong ( I think this is due to having
downloaded a patch from microsoft, as I have tried to reinstall tshoot, but
nothing happened).
Eventually i found a dialogue box telling me that the task which caused
windows to stop responding was "calling a PnP bios= get statistically
allocated resource information, ref 0A 00 00 00 Do 02 E8 00".
I have now managed to startup after running spybot and disabling some
startup tasks which may have viruses, but need to try and fix this before i
shut down, as I think I'll have problems rebooting next time.
Any advice would be gratefully received
