virtual pc 2007 and win98se
I have an ISO of win98se and can't get that vitual pc 2007 to boot it. I
play with the bios and it just won't boot from a virtual cdrom. Or a floppy either for that matter. Does anyone know how to deal with this thing or suggest another virtual machine ? Virtual box I can't get to work because it says something about COM. And an error. Bill |

You also don't say if the ISO is for the setup config of files (i.e., bootable disc with setup.exe) for Windows 98 or if it is a copy of an already installed instance of Windows 98 (but the disc must be made bootable since you won't be reading the boot sector and boot loader code from the HDD when booting from the disc), and whether either ISO is an unfettered full version or an upgrade version (neither have been installed anywhere else). I play with the bios and it just won't boot from a virtual cdrom. Requires that the disc in the optical drive be bootable. .iso files do not make a disc bootable. Depending on what the ISO actually contains, you will have to burn it *contents* to a disc. But first what the ISO contains is a needed detail. When you insert a bootable disc for something ELSE, do you see a prompt during the computer's startup (after the POST screen) saying to hit [some] key to boot from the disc? Just setting the BIOS to specify the boot order has CD/DVD before HDD doesn't preclude the boot sequence from issuing the prompt to boot from CD/DVD, timing out, and moving on to the next device in the BIOS boot order (i.e., HDD). Some computers boot so fast that the prompt to "hit a key to boot from CD/DVD" may flash on and off too quickly for you to notice or get masked by clearing the POST screen and Windows starting to load before the video shows the boot from disc prompt. Check what the manual says for your motherboard or pre-built computer to find out what key (if a special one instead of any key) will have it boot from the optical drive if it is listed in the BIOS boot order before the HDD. You might have to wait until the POST screen disappears and immediately start tapping the key to tell the BIOS to boot from the disc instead of timing out and proceeding to the HDD; i.e., you will have to hit the trigger key in the blind. Or a floppy either for that matter. That must be a bootable diskette, too, not just containing data files. That device would have to be listed first in the BIOS boot order sequence (before the optical and hard drives). Does anyone know how to deal with this thing or suggest another virtual machine ? You haven't identified what is the contents of the ISO "thing". Virtual box I can't get to work because it says something about COM. Is "it" Virtualbox issuing the error? Or is the Windows 98 installer issuing the error? And an error. Oh, a secret error. Can't help with those. |

In my collection, I have a Win98 CD, plus an Upgrade version of Win98SE. You install Win98 first, then apply the Win98SE Upgrade Disc. That's got to make a difference to the whole exercise. You need both ISO files anyway, as the Win98SE will prompt for "proof" you have a Win98 disc. Since I don't remember what I did at the time, I would probably try... 1) VPC2007, clean virtual disk (at least 4GB). 4GB was the size of my hard drive back then... Install Win98, using win98.iso from VPC menu (before BIOS boot starts) 2) After Win98 install is finished, try presenting win98se.iso . See if the setup.exe autoruns, and whether it'll agree to do the upgrade install from the running OS. (As opposed to trying to boot the win98se.iso...) HTH, Paul |

VanguardLH wrote VMMs (Virtual Machine Managers) don't boot .iso files. Yes it will If you know how To set it up You are assuming the .iso file contains a bootable image. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5753 That is distributed using an .iso file. There is no OS within it. It is not a bootable image inside the .iso file. It is a *data* image. Microsoft expects you to burn the ISO to a CD-R to then load the disc into an optical drive (or you can use a optical drive emulator to mount the .iso file) and use an existing and running OS to read from the drive for that disc to load and execute the installer within. It is just a data image, not a bootable image. The OP has not yet identified just what is inside the ISO file. "ISO of Win98" might be a bootable ISO image (i.e., a clone of an instance of Windows 98), it could be the installer disc, or it could be just a bunch of [data] files copied from the OS partition into the image. ISOs are also archive files. It's been awhile since I last used VirtualPC 2007. As I recall, you had to go into the properties of the VM to attach a physical optical drive (in the host OS) to then see it inside the guest OS running in the VM. Just loading a bootable disc in the optical drive which is only known to the host OS won't make it available within the VM. Before getting too far into diagnosis, we need to know if the the VM actually has a mapping to the physical optical drive. As I recall, you cannot attach a physical optical drive in the host OS to the VM until you stopped the VM. That is, device changes required the VM was not loaded; else, device options would be grayed out. Virtual pc 2007 Read ISO As if it was a Newly Burn Bootable OS Disc On D:\ Only if the .iso file is actually a disk image for an OS; i.e., so the ISO is actually bootable. The OP has not identified *what* is inside the .iso file. The OP said, "play with the bios and it just won't boot from a virtual cdrom". I don't remember there were any BIOS settings inside a VM. You changed devices in the VM settings, not in an [emulated] BIOS. When you insert a bootable disc i.e., you will have to hit the trigger key in the blind. Or a floppy either for that matter. I doubt the OP has an .iso file containing a bootable Windows XP image on a floppy drive so I focused on the likely media type: CD/DVD/BD disc. |
