You can change the playback speed and slow it down. Not sure if it can
do frame-by-frame.

I think you can slow it down to something like 1/4 real-time.

Here, I found this on the web:

========
Space: toggle pause/play

F: toggle full-screen (you can also use Esc to leave full-screen mode)
Z: change zoom mode
Ctrl + Up/Down: Adjust volume up/down (can also use mouse scroll wheel)
M: toggle mute
T: display time remaining/elapsed
+/-: play media faster/slower
S: stop play
Ctrl + H: toggle control display
E: watch video frame by frame
V: toggle subtitles
P: previous item in media que
N: next item in media que
==========

So "E" on the keyboard will apparently do frame-by-frame.

yes found on the Win98 left there from years ago: vlc 0.8.6 and can't
change size of zcreen, corner dragging or just maximum.

I down'loaded something for the WinXP, 22MB and more recent than what
was on there by one subrev level 5 to 6. It does seem snappy and
'smooths' the image ok, but...I can't step frame by frame. I need to
stop on a frame SANPSHOT, step to next frame SNAPSHOT and can't do
that in VLC

Oh well....

I don't know about OS requirements, but this tool is good for
moving frame by frame through a video.

That version is ancient.

But nonetheless, I don't recall any version of VLC (including that one)
not being able to dynamically resize the view-window when playing back a
video.

I down'loaded something for the WinXP, 22MB and more recent than

The most current version of VLC is 2.0.6.

Oh well....

I have no idea what your problem is.

I searched my computer for a variety of .AVI files - some of which were
captured with a digital camera, some were captured with an IP camera
(Trendnet).

For all of them, when the video starts to play, I press the "E" key, and
the video immediately stops and the word "Next Frame" appears
transiently in the upper right-hand corner of the image. *Every time I
press "E", the video advances a single frame and stops.

Didn't see anywhere it said to hit 'e'? Is this a standard control of
video? That when you wnat to stop and frame advance, hit 'e'?

Will try, I do like the image 'quality' and smoothing that VLC does.

In the post I made on Friday morning (2 posts ago), the post that you
replied to on Friday afternoon, I said this:

"So "E" on the keyboard will apparently do frame-by-frame."

And you didn't see that?

Is this a standard control of video?

Who says there's a standard? It's not a commonly-used feature.

That when you want to stop and frame advance, hit 'e'?

Again, with VLC, you play the file. When you get to the part where you
want to start advancing frame-by-frame, you hit the "e" key on the
keyboard. The video playback immediately stops, and transiently
displays the words "Next Frame" in the top right-hand corner of the
image. When you want to advance to the next frame, just press the "e"
key on the keyboard again. Keep pressing it to keep advancing a single
frame.

Will try, I do like the image 'quality' and smoothing that VLC
does.

If you want to adjust the image (lighten it, darken it, adjust the
contrast, color intensity, etc) do this:

While the video is playing (or when it's paused - your choice), select
Tools, Effects and Filters. A new window will open. Select the Video
Effects tab. Put a check in the "Image Adjust" box, and move the
various sliders and note their effect on the image. You can do the same
with the "Sharpen" functions in the same window, but the sharpen
function might a very good / fast graphics card and CPU to do this in
real time.

You should also notice that at the bottom of the list of options under
Video is "Take Snapshot" - which saves the currently-displayed frame to
a file under "c:\My Documents\My Pictures" as a PNG file.

The PC is disassembled right now, will do when back together.

I did try the Video Editor that Paul recommended Avideomux and
installed it on Win98. WOW! Worked great until I froze frame then hung
evyerhting strangely. But still a super impressive bit of free
software. It has all the controls on the control panel, so frame by
frame was obvious how to do. just didn't work on the Win98. But is ok
if I just let the avi play and don't interrrupt it.

You could boot a Linux LiveCD, and run Avidemux from there.

This is a Ubuntu LiveCD, running Avidemux from package manager.
Got the sample movie, off the net.

http://imageshack.us/a/img24/7424/avidemuxlivecd.jpg

It's still a pretty picky damn application. It barfed on
two sample files I fed it. And it's pure misery, if you're
attempting to actually output .avi with it. Funny as hell,
to be called *AVI* demux, and then not be able to output
valid AVI files :-) But if you want to walk frame by frame,
I've used it just for that function a couple times.

I looked at the info for the Windows version, and it mentions
WinXP minimum for some reason. And if you were to download
an earlier version, who knows how robust and functional
that would be.

got it back together and....

works just like said.
watch until, oops missed, so start over, ok just now OOPS missed
again! is ok one more try, caught where I wanted to be. hit 'e' and
stops perfectly! hit 'e' advances one frame great! oh, oh went too
far, step back one, oops started over. ...sigh.

is there a 'step back one frame' button?

other wise VLC does exactly what I need, ...in one direction.

I should download the linux ubuntu version. Jeff Lieberman very kindly
sent me a linux CD. I didn't think to use it for this. Thanks for the
tip!

In mean time I'll try avidemux on the WinXP, because its control panel
looks EXACTLY like what I need.

The ability to step backwards by a single frame seems to be something
that people have been asking for in VLC - at least going back a year
ago. I don't think it has this ability yet.

I just tried Media Player Classic (mplayerc.exe). The version I have is
6.4.8.2 (file date March 28, 2004) and it indeed does single-frame
advance / reverse.

When playing a file with MplayerC, hit the left or right arrow keys on
the keyboard. This will immediately pause the video. Hitting either
arrow key will advance or reverse the video by one frame - although the
responsiveness or accuracy of going in the reverse direction might not
be perfect.

I also have Mplayerc.exe version 6.4.9.0 and reverse single-frame
playback also works.

Media Player Classic will also save the current frame (as a bmp or
jpeg). Select "File" then "Save Image". It will open a dialog box that
allows you to specify the file type and save location.

downloaded after much 'fussing' with their website at sourceforge.
Only to find out must have WinXP SP3 for it to work. Not your version,
but a later version. so will have to look for yours, I guess, because
the avidemux works great BUT! can't change view window. can change
'control' window, but not how large the actual image is. But it's
step forard backward seems to work perfectly.

I just ran avidemux on the WinXP. Worked PERFECTLY for these security
cam videos and easily step either direction, BUT! can't change image
size?! can change control window size, but not the image size. Oh
well it does do what I want and the images off my cameras are large
enough so will work/function.

I tried to view an .avi from a realtor that I got years ago when we
were house hunting. The image pops into the screen, but when you hit
play, the program announces it's creating a 'rash' file and quits!
Can't view these avi videos go figure, I used to watch them on the
Win98 and now these old avi's won't view on the avidemux on the WinXP.
