Your earlier phrase about a cranky aunt that's painful to see is
EXACTLY correct. What used to be the fastest easiest experience on the
net has turned into a total grind. Actually dread having to search for
anything now. *I'd rather read the bibliographies at the end of papers.

Exactly so! I was thinking that. Wikipedia, for example. The external links
and references are WAY better than Google at this.

If they can do it without getting paid by advertising, why can't Google do it
WITH all that money?

Even google's old ads I did not mind. Actually appreciated finding a
few suppliers listed off to the side, out of the way, but easy to
read. Went there and found what I needed, so was a win-win. *if* a
focused search follows what I'm doing and supplies me with potential
suppliers, I don't mind. But even some number of those ads yields dead
URLs ?!

google's "improvements" included not letting me LOG OUT, nor gain
access to any personal settings. just get NOTHING! when I click, or
pull down an extra menu and click

Those could be a bug that happens when some browser or web filter conflicts
with other settings Google save locally in cookies. I saw a save-settings bug
once. I can't remember how I solved it, but it was possible locally. I'm sure
clearing cookies had something to do with it. I think there was more to it
though, and that's the bit I forget.

I only keep around 30 cookies, containing log in information/history
of importance

But I could purge ALL of google's cookies and start over just to see,
thanks for the suggestion.
