Default After new installation of Millennium

Hi.
I re-formatted my computer's hard-drive and I re-installed Windows
Millennium. But after re-installation I get an extremely crappy display with
only 16 colors and 640x480 resolution. I think I need new drivers or
something, but I have no idea what I need or where to get it from.
I know that, before I messed with the computer, I was getting as high as
True Color (32-bit) and 1024x768, so the problem isn't the hardware.
Can anyone help me, please?

P.S.
Belarc Advisor says, under Display, that I have:
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) [Display adapter]
OEC 15.7 [Monitor] (15.7"vis, June 1997)

Ah - you are using the default drivers for the VGA display, which accounts
for the problem. You need to download new drivers and install them.
Since Belarc isn't telling you what the hardware is, try using AIDA32
instead - http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#aida32
with any luck, that will give you a link to the display adapter
manufacturer's website, from which you can download the latest Win ME
drivers (or post back here with what it does find, and we'll have a look for
you)
If it comes up with no further details, you'll need to go through he
documentation that came with the PC, and see if that details the adapter -
or open the case and see if you can tell. You could also let us know the
make/model of the PC.

Hi.

I installed Aida32.

Under Display, it says the following:

WINDOWS VIDEO
- Video Adapter Properties
Device Description - Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
Installed Drivers - vga.drv

PCI/AGP VIDEO
Matrox G100 AGP (Matrox MGA-G100 AGP)

GPU
this field is completely blank

MONITOR
- Monitor Properties
Monitor Name - Plug and Play Monitor
Monitor ID - OEC17DB
Manufacture Date - Week 23 / 1997
Serial Number - 7232
and so on info about the monitor

If there is any other info that you require to help me, please ask, because
I don't know exactly what else to tell you.

What I know is that this is a very old computer, a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB,
with Intel Celeron processor, 300 MHz. I know it's not the best computer, but
I like it very much.

Oh, by the way, I'm not writing this using that computer. I think that it
also needs a modem driver, and possibly other drivers as well, because I
can't connect to the Internet yet, and I can't use the CD my ISP gave me,
because the CD wants a higher resolution to work.

Please give me some more pointers!

http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/dr...s/w9x_433c.cfm
would seem to be the link for your drivers

Unfortunately, it would seem that the card is not fully supported under ME
except for the above - and they are really only Win98 drivers, so may not
run perfectly.

Noel,

I don't think there should be too much problem with those drivers. My old
Win Me box has a Matrox G100AGP card but the origin of the drivers is
somewhat odd. It ran v4.33c and then v5.52 whilst running 98SE and no
change was made when it was upgraded to Win Me and it is still running
those v5.52 drivers. The files making up the v5.52 drivers differ
considerably from those making up 4.33c but nevertheless those drivers,
which were for 98SE, continue to work without problem with Win Me.

I did wonder if perhaps this was the origin of the OP's problem - the system
being originally Win98 and then upgraded to ME.
Thanks for the confirmation that the drivers should work

Thank you very much, Noel!

Indeed, I can get 1024x768 resolution (even 1280x1024, if I want) and True
Color 32-bit now. Thanks a million! You are a computer wizard!
(How do you guys know so much? I searched the Internet for 2 days, and I was
still lost...)

Anyhow, I hope I can get my old computer back working again. It was so
unstable before I re-formatted the hard-drive, hopefully now it will behave.

Best wishes to both of you!
