Default Messed up

Hi,

I've been very stupid. A friend of mine gave me a program called Xen tweak
and like a 1st class pratt I gave it a wirl, using Xen to backup my registry
before I made any changes. Everything was fine when I did all the tweaks and
tips, and then... I went to log onto the internet and my password was missing
(It's usually automatically filled in). It's been that long since I typed my
password and I forgot it. So, I though no problem and used Xen to restore my
registry.

However, when I rebooted there's nothing. It boots to the screen where it
has 4 options... Normal, Safe mode etc and it says uder that 'Windows has
found an error in the cofigeration of the registy, use SCANREG to fix
problem. If I try to go to Normal or Safe mode, It just hangs with the
desktop picture in the background and I have to CTRLALTDEL twice to get
out. It also won't shutdown, I've had to kill the power.

Will I need to create a boot disk from Bootdisk.com? and where do I go from
there.

I can't beleive I done this especially after reading posts on these forums
about registry editors and how bad they are.

Any help would be greatly received.

Many thanks,

Canna.

Canna,

Get yourself a bootable floppy (see below) and then boot using the floppy
and select either 2 or 3 from the Menu (but not 4). Then, at the A:\
prompt type
SCANREG /RESTORE
Follow the prompts and choose a backup copy of the registry that
immediately predates your having used Xen. When complete remove the
floppy and reboot the system.

You can download the image of a Win Me OEM boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com. Download to your desktop, double click to run and
follow the prompts to transfer the image to a floppy. Do NOT copy the
downloaded file to a floppy - that won't make a bootable floppy but
instead a floppy disk containing the file you downloaded.

This can be done on any PC and then the floppy used with the PC having
problems.

Thanks Mike,

I've created the boot disk at work. I'll try the restore when I get home and
hopefully will be posting later to tell you everything went well from the
computer with the problem.

Cheers.

Hi Mike,

Just one question, when you said select option 2 or 3 I just want to make
sure what they refer to. On my PC option 2 = Something like BOOTLOG.TXT and
option 3 = Safe mode. If I select option 3 would it not boot or try to boot
to safe mode?

Cheers,

Canna.

I am referring to the menu displayed when you boot from the Floppy. 1 is
Help, 2 & 3 to boot DOS with or without CD support and 4 is minimal boot.
You need to choose either 2 or 3.

That's good news. How did you fix the problem? Was it by using scanreg
/restore or was it by some other method?

I did exactly what you said, created the boot disk, booted to DOS then
SCANREG/ RESTORE. I selected the day before I used Xen and restarted
(removing the floppy first).

Many thanks for your help.

Canna,

Thanks for responding. It's always useful to know what worked (and also
what didn't) as it helps when trying to help others with similar problems.

Cheers,

No problem glad tohelp the helper and others. One thing that I've though of
that my be of use to other is... Is there a quick way of booting to DOS? I
went into my setup and changed the 1st boot from IDE 0 to floppy. I was just
wondering how would you do it?

Cheers.
