Default Critical Updates KB867282 & KB891781

Can someone please explain in clear, direct English, as opposed to what is
on the WU site, what loss in OS or IE functionality will result from
downloading the latest two security updates? (KB867282 & KB891781)

For the previous update, I lost Help Troubleshooter, but managed to bring it
back thanks to the Dundat Workaround plus some expert help from the board.
Will I need to reinstall this? Or apply other fixes for other problems?

I'm afraid I've finally reached the point where downloading a critical
security update has become a cost/benefit decision.

While no one can guarantee it, neither *critical* security update /should/
cause you any problems, Roger. Each was beta-tested in Win98. If on the
off-chance they do, both are fully uninstallable via Add/Remove Programs.

These updates are only available for Win9x users via Windows Update.

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

Can someone please direct me to the latest cumulative update for IE6SP1 for
98?

Update 867282 MS05-014

I'm really in need of a manual download link for this, not through Windows
Update.

Thanks.

Thanks PA Bear. I believe last time I posted I picked up my marbles and left
the playground in a huff and I'm sorry about that.
I'll try it.

It doesn't appear that there is one for Win98. You'll need to launch
your ISP software and its processes, modem , etc., and then use Windows
Update... just remember that "to assure a clean install, your anti-virus
application should be disabled and *all other running processes closed*
before installing anything". Good luck with that.

But, a little birdie tells me that in my TIF folder there is a
functional 3.48MB file named:
E6.0sp1-KB867282-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU_82d59697d62dfa0d9a852443cbd6125[1].exe

Of course, you can't ask me to email that to you, even if that is a
valid email address in your header, because it is illegal to distribute
such things. ;-)

Sorry to have to report this but the news is mostly bad:

1. When you install the updates, you lose the Troubleshooter function even
when you start it with the workaround, at least that's what happened to me.
2. Neither of the updates appeared in Add/Remove.

Fortunately, GoBack was successful so that now the workaround functions as
it should. Since I now know I can uninstall these updates I'm willing to try
again, but first I'll need a method to uninstall/reinstall the Troublshooter
workaround, or else have some confidence going into it that reinstalling it
over itself will recharge it.

Robear, 3 critical updates installed individually with a reboot between each
update to allow GoBack history in case of a problem. 98SE is all up to date
again and I am currently working on slowly individually updating XP PRO. I
like to go slow and find out if one update causes a problem rather than
update all at once. I always try to update one by one with a reboot although
this is time-consuming it helps me indentify issues with my computer.
SpySweeper start-up menu alerts me to changes in the start-up menu in
association with particular updates. Ah, I love my computer and thank
Microsoft for helping to keep it secure. Have an awesome day, RoBear.
E-mail me again sometime if you want and we can talk more about certain
security issues. I always enjoy talking to you and Gary Terhune and almost
everyone else.

Why do you need the trobleshooters so badly, Roger? Why don't you just buy a
good Microsoft Windows 98SE book? I do not bother with the troubleshooters
because I rely on this newsgroup, the internet, books, some tech. friends,
Microsoft courses, etc. for my learning. I also use GoBack (latest version)
for 98SE side and default System Restore on XP PRO. side of my dual-boot
computer.
