Default extrem SLOW COMPUTER

M i HAVE A DELL DIMENSIONS L667R COMPUTER RUN BY WINDOWS
M UPDATED 98 VERSION. I ALSO HAVE COMCAST CABLE INTERNET
M SERICE. ANY IDEA ON WHAT TO DO TO SPEED UP COMPUTER???
M VERY SLOW???? HELP

As someone else noted, turn off the Caps Lock -- typing in all
capitals is considerd 'shouting' in text. (As well as hard to read.)

Now the question is, _what_ is slow? Was it a sudden slow-down? Did
adding the cable internet connection cause the computer to suddenly
slow, or are the two not related?

One way to increase computer speed is to defrag (defragment) your hard
drive. The slowness would generally be slow onset. A fragmented
drive means the files are broken into pieces and scattered all over
the place -- the computer has to "put them back together" and this
takes a little time.

If you have a drive which is near capacity (do you need to clean out
the recycle bin?) that could also cause some strange slow-downs. I
had a recent slowdown on my W2K system when doing mailruns -- the
drive where the files and session logs are stored was nearly full but
the other drives were fine. Did a little house cleaning and the speed
is back to normal.

First I do not know much about the model. But could you specify what is the
CPU of the computerand how much memory on your computer. I believe that it
isn't the CABLE INTERNET. Mine is a P2 300MHZ computer with 192 MB RAM using
win98SE.

Oneway to ind out the cause is to identofy the resource consumed. Go to
START, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, click on SYSTEM MONITOR and activate
(inlude) whatever devices on your computer. You will see what actually use
the most resource and go from there.

You can also try to clean up TMP files in the TEMPORARIES folders and
WINDOWS directory. If the MY DOCUMENTS directory has too many files and
folders, you can move them outside.

If your connection is too slow. You can go to this site
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and download the TCP Optimizer
software. Follow some simple instruction to increase speed

Good Luck and get back with the result
