Problem with writing/updating to a 32 GB USB stick.

Regards, Rudy Wieser In that case, I might give it a try, without removing any present drivers. I wish I knew what files it modifies in Windows, so I could back them up. I'm sure the registry, but what else??? Of course I do have a full backup too, but I'd rather just go back a day with the registry and maybe replace Win.Ini or soemthing, than restore the whole thing. The good thing about Win98, is that you can replace a backup, or even move an installation of W98 to another computer and it will usually work. You cant do that with XP.... I learned that the hard way. |

No, I'm warning people that MDGX and others have pulled it. I used to get it there and it's not there anymore without any reason known. It's as if it never existed and we know it did. Tis a bit odd, methinks. And 3.3 IS supported? Again no. I don't even know that it is, but it is found at least. POINT of post - neither of these works here as it should. They may install XP files, ME files and all the other good stuff. But they don't link together such that you get an XP like pop up in the system tray when you stick in your USB drive. And because of that, Windows Explorer will or won't see it, will or won't write to it, will or won't ruin it, all and only depending on if it's a Tuesday. That's a seat of the pants evaluation of craptastic USB support. I think that's kinda important. I got mine working by also installing R Loews free USB files and by placing HOTPLUG.EXE into the startup folder, it now all works pretty good. Which is another seat of the pants evaluation. But at least the carnage in broken, borked USB drives has come to an end. I can actually let XP format one and the results are a formatted drive with no issues. I would think Win7 has a fuller list of USB drives and their associated oddities. But Bill Gates did not phone me and tell me that, I'm short on proof it seems. Real point of interest to me is that Win7 will run diagnostics on an inserted drive. That's handy info. Thanks for that, I'll have to try that out. Confusing part is Loew says there are other better USB support files out there. I assume he is talking about the 3.3 and 3.6 NUSB packages - yet they don't work here like they are supposed to. I do not get a popup in the system tray until I force it to be there via the startup folder containing HOTPLUG.EXE file. ONLY in his instructions is this vital system setup even mentioned. His method is to do it manually, I'm fine with that. He further says you should NOT do it on 98 systems, it's for 95 only. I didn't listen to that part and did it anyway. I also don't want any part of the STOP2USB files, I have 1.1. Is that covered by the '2' series? Don't say, won't use it then. It must have been a Tuesday when I was able to use 98 USB drives before, can't really remember that part. But ever since I do get the pop up, things are working way much more better. I wanted to let somebody know that it's all supposed to work just like XP does it. And I have that only now. http://rloew.x10host.com/free.htm One of the files installed by NUSB 3.6 is usbccgp.sys, which is the "USB Common Class Generic Parent Driver" and comes from Win-XP SP3. I posted the following here in 2014. Maybe it provides some answers or new information. I don't know if any of the links work. If anyone wants any of these files - ask me. And remember, you need to wipe quite a bit of your existing USB stuff out of your device manager before you install NUSB. You might even have to start your computer in safe mode when you go into device manager - you typically see stuff in Device Manager when you're in safe mode that you don't see when you've booted normally. ------------------------- Thanks for offering help 98 Guy |

I posted this link in 2014: http://www.tmeeco.eu/Fileden/nusb36e.exe That link is still working. That site *has not* pulled NUSB 3.6. POINT of post - neither of these works here as it should. But they don't link together such that you get an XP like pop up in the system tray when you stick in your USB drive. I've just plugged in a thumb drive into my win-98 system. 4 seconds later I get a small icon in my system tray, near the clock. The icon is some sort of box with a green arrow over it. If I hover the mouse over the icon this text pops up: Unplug or Eject hardware If I click on the icon, a window opens showing me the attached USB disk (the thumb drive in question) and it gives me the option to stop (un-mount) the device (so I can safely unplug it). If I click on "My Computer" (aka file explorer) the thumb drive shows up as "Removable Disk (H If I plug in thumb drive my system has never seen before, a few windows will transiently pop-up telling me that new hardware has been detected and a driver is being installed. Those windows don't ask me to do anything. They don't ask me for the location of a file, driver, etc. Those windows go away as fast as they popped up. And after they're gone, that small icon with the green arrow I mentioned above appears in my system try. So what more do you want? And because of that, Windows Explorer will or won't see it Your system is cracked. You obviously haven't installed NUSB properly. will or won't write to it, will or won't ruin it, all and only depending on if it's a Tuesday. That's a seat of the pants evaluation of craptastic USB support. I would submit that your system is faulty. Either from a configuration, a driver, or registry point of view. If your win-98 system installation dates back as far as 2000, just think about the 15 years that have gone by. Time enough for stuff to get messed up. Files, registry entries, even bad sectors on your hard drive. But be that as it may, I'm just pointing out that NUSB works. It does what it's suppose to do, I see and experience it with my own eyes. Even NUSB 3.6. |

Problem with writing/updating to a 32 GB USB stick.
I can assure you MDGX site is where I got 3.6 from. It carries a 2012 modified date. Within the last year I did find the overseas site hosting it as well, with no idea that it is the source in the first place. I also have 3.5 with 2015 date. It would appear that my system is indeed cracked, your detailed accounting is not my experience without HOTPLUG use. I know it's stuck in between IE 6.00 and IE 5.50 SP2 reinstall attempt with some oddities about such as Outlook Express is broken. I have not the slightest indications of USB activity without HOTPLUG.EXE in the startup folder at times. Other times a new Windows Explorer instance will show the USB drive, but sometimes not. And I used to suffer a casualty rate on USB drives that was none too good. Every possible way attempted to install either NUSB package including pulling the USB 2.0 card and trying three others with nuking of the ENUM key each time such that some baseline of stock USB support was in place before installing NUSB package yet again. I've been putting off a clean reinstall of 98se for years, this thread just adding to the list of good reasons to find the time to do that. False alarm then, my bad all over. Thanks for your detailed accounting, I can see that on your box, NUSB 3.6 is working just as it should. Welcome news really, I can look forward to good results with NUSB 3.6 after the format C: deal then. |

Do you know any *reason* for that ? I mean, if other USB drivers can be installed at the same time, why can't NUSB also be ? To be honest, I just took that as a "if you want our driver to service all your USB devices, you need to remove the old ones". But than what is the need to do that *before* NUSB, and not just delete a driver when you want, and have NUSB detect the device the next time. [] I never understood it, but it's true. I have two experiences with a universal USB driver (probably NUSB): 1. Like someone else in this thread, I too had lots of USB drivers installed over the years, and didn't understand why I should remove those (take out what was working) in order to just be able to add another driver. So I just installed it on the system as is. It right royally screwed up the system: it's now sufficient years ago that I don't remember how or how I recovered, but it took a lot of effort to do so. (I might even have given up and restored from a backup, I can't remember now.) 2. I built a system from scratch, using "soporific's tenth anniversary edition of Windows 98", which included a universal USB driver (I think NUSB, don't know if the same edition as 1.). It worked perfectly, with any stick I tried it with (which wasn't that many). [The "tenth ..." looked like a very well-put-together OS; I wish I'd had more time to play with it. It came on (an iso of) a CD, that had been packed to the limit with extras (not least drivers for lots of hardware that had appeared since '98 ceased support).] -- J. P. Gilliver. Problem with writing/updating to a 32 GB USB stick.
Oh joy ...
Somewhere along the line (not sure if before my buying the stick, or because of the number of hard-freezes needing a power-cycle) my 32GB stick has decided it can't access the upper 8GB anymore (did an extensive "try to read every sector", followed by a "write and verify" wipe/check). To top that up now XP decides that it can't format the stick anymore -- but no reason is given -- and does not allow me to provide a smaller size (to exclude the top 8GB) Win98se (the 'puter all the problems started with) does not fare any better, as my idea to FDISK a smaller partition (than the whole stick) was twarted by its non-skippable "integrity check" which decided that as it can't access the upper 8 GB is enough to disallow me to create a partition (of *any* size) ... Bummer. I hoped to be able to do a new backup, seeing if disabeling the screensaver would make any difference. Oh well, I can still do the "write and verify" test on my W98se macine (which the stick passed on my XP machine), and see if it makes any difference with, and without the screensaver being active.
