Default Updating from ME to XP home on Gateway using AMD Athalon Processor

Updating from ME to XP home on 2000 Gateway 850MHz , 384MB RAM , using AMD
Athlon Processor 2000 . Installing windows portion of process "Hangs" with 41
minutes remaining. Retried several times after rebooting, unistalling ME.
Any ideas?

My computer specs:
Processor
AMD Athlon, 850 MHz
100MHz external bus

BIOS
American Megatrends Inc. 0AASNP05 07/23/1999

Memory
Upgrade
384MB physical
61% free resources
3 memory slots, 0 free (128+128+128)

Video
Upgrade
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
Screen Area/Colors: 1280x1024 pixels, 16 million colors
Monitor: EV700
Monitor: Default Monitor

Drives
Upgrade
C:\ (FAT32) 19459MB total, 17882MB free
D:\ CD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD Drive

Network and Modem
Upgrade
(net) Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter
(net) 3Com 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI For Complete PC Management NIC (3C905C-
TX)

I've seen variations of this problem posted in the past. To date I've yet to
see a firm work around for this problem posted by anyone anywhere! Not
trying to be funny but have you thought about getting another CPU with XPHome
Edition pre-installed?

Un-install or disable any antivirus program before starting the
upgrade.
