Default A puzzler

After repeated queries and replies here I have been connected to the
internet on my ThinkPad 770 via a PCMCIA Xircom combo modem/NIC. Only a
few days ago I discovered that in the ThinkPad Configuration utility
PCMCIA shows that it is turned off.

Any suggestions why this still works?

What version number of the utility are you using? Versions before 3.55 apparently
had a bug that showed PCMCIA as disabled, judging by this IBM support document:
