FDISK/MBR write protect error.....
I have a problem the cause of which could be a corrupted or infected
MBR, but virus scans with Norton AV and Trend online don't find a virus. I've been advised and come to the conclusion that my only chance to fix it was to run fdisk/mbr. I'm using Win98. But when I do run fdisk/mbr I get the message, "Write protect error writing fixed disk. The master boot code has NOT been updated." I turned off my Norton AV and ZoneAlarmPro, and anything else that I thought had even a slight chance of interfering, but still got the error message. And I can't find anything in the BIOS setup that might be protecting the MBR that I could disable. Any suggestions on getting fdisk/mbr to work would be appreciated. |

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.
microsoft.public.scripting.virus.discussion microsoft.public.security.virus alt.comp.virus alt.comp.anti-virus If you did you may have received a reply from Zvi Netiv a frequent replier to the above News Groups and a software engineer for Invicible Anti Virus. Have you gone into the BIOS and made sure you can write to the Boot Sector ? Many BIOS' have the ability to block changes to the Boot Sector. Finally, I suggest going to the URL http://www.invircible.com/iv_tools.php#Ivinit and obtaining IVINIT. This is a utility for removing Boot Sector Infectors, assuming that's your problem. As I mentioned the OP, yes. Couldn't find anything there that would block writing to the mbr. Finally, I suggest going to the URL http://www.invircible.com/iv_tools.php#Ivinit and obtaining IVINIT. This is a utility for removing Boot Sector Infectors, assuming that's your problem. Thanks for the suggestion. UVINIT did correct something, probably an infection, and I was able to run Drive Image which was freezing up before because it couldn't write to the mbr. But it did something to my HDD setup, and the removable drive that I put my backup images on is no longer being listed or accessible. Do you have any thoughts on this? No but you can email Invircible and they, or Zvi Netiv himself, may respond.
