reinstall windows

My computor froze up and when I restrated it a message appeared "mm32.vxd. if
this file is not in your path you may need to reinstall windows. Can someone
tell me what to do?

Do you mean VMM32.vxd? That is a very important file. Can you boot to Safe Mode? Hold F5 or CTRL (for the Startup Menu) as you boot to get there.

If you are left at a DOS Prompt, try... DIR C:\VMM32.vxd /a /s

Here is what it may look like...
C:\DIR C:\VMM32.vxd /a /s
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
VMM32 VXD 941,094 07-22-99 12:21a VMM32.VXD
1 file(s) 941,094 bytes
