Default 98SE machine with problems

I am working on 98SE machines at the school that I work at and yes I
finally do not have to work retail at Target. Thank Goodness - after 7+
years I had had enough of retail and the constant statement of whether
sales had been made at the end of each evening. Of course I wanted to
ask Microsoft a quick question but they said that 98SE was not supported
anymore and did not listen to my plea that it was for a school that had
limited technology funds.

So, I am now asking this newsgroup for advice on one machine. The
computer loads up mostly fine after I have worked on it but it is
missing a file called nwlink.vxd. The operating system starts to load
and it says this file is missing in the System.Ini. I was wondering if
I load the Windows Security Update cd from February 2004 if this will
correct the problem or if another method is needed. Thanks in advance
for comments and yes I finally get to work with older computers like
98SE and newer ones with XP Professional and children which are my two
great joys in life. all this study has paid off -- grin

All I can tell you is that there is no such file in the original
98SE distr. and if you have a firewall, antivirus, and don't use
IE/OE or Office, you don't need any updates. Ignore the message,
or add the line to system.ini (load=nwlink.vxd)and the message
MAY stop appearing (see how little I know?).

Or you could DL and install the file:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;273727

Since the computers are in a school, no matter what you do, you
will be removing viruses and trojans all the time, so why even
bother with largely pointless updates?

Also, if you want to get rid of the message, and several
computers are virtually identical, just make a C drive image and
copy it to the machine in question. Actually, considering what I
mentioned in the previous paragraph, you might be wise to do
that on one machine anyway, AFTER YOU SET IT UP JUST RIGHT. A
lot easier than twiddling around with every machine anytime
something goes wrong.

Just make sure they are set up so all the kids' work goes on
another partition.

If it corrects your problem or not i can't say, but you can try just
running [273727usa8.exe](2001-01-05_DS), that is present on the
'Security Update CD' as that includes an updated version of that file
[NWLink.vxd]. ... if you for some reason don't want to install the other
security updates.

My layout1.inf file tells me that nwlink.vxd exists in net9.cab.

I forgot that I have W98SE Lite installed on a non-internet/non-
network machine therefore all such files are not there by my
choice.

A also have a backup directory of all the W98SE files, but
again, apparently nothing from net*.cab's, or something to that
effect. It's been a while.

Anyway, I provided the link to the "updated/patched" (shouldn't
MS trademark those words?) file in the same post.

Thank you for pointing out my unforgivable mistake anyway.

The security update cd did correct the problem. Currently, I am working
on 3 98SE computers and 1 is running well while the other 2 still need work.
