Win95 to Win98 Upgrade BIOS Update problem
We are trying to upgrade an old computer from Win 95 to Win 98; installation
went well until the end when the CD-ROM was not recognized after restarting. We discovered this when trying to find driver files for the video card. Device Manager shows a problem with the Secondary IDE Controller, "the driver is installed but not operating properly." At some point, a BIOS Update was mentioned. The problem is how do we know which one and where do we get it. Following is the information on the computer: Pentium II - MMX - 233, 4GB hard drive, 128MB RAM Motherboard information: Intel 440LX AGP-PCI BIOS for Pentium II Processor v.196 Award Modular BIOS, v. 4.51PGM 11/21/97 - i440LX-W977-2A69JG0HC - 00 This upgrade is being done for elderly friends who cannot afford a new computer. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

No, if the drive and the controller were alright prior to the upgrade, it is highly
unlikely that a BIOS update is needed. See if the info in this article applies to the computer in question - Problems with Hard Disk and CD-ROM Drive After Upgrading: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=189092 Otherwise, and more likely to be relevant, follow this procedu Go to http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm and click the link on the left for "Remove NOIDE Flag" Direct download of the .reg file, in a .zip file http://aumha.org/downloads/noide.zip Download the file, then extract the .reg file to your Desktop; right-click the NOIDE.REG file and click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation message. Restart the computer in Safe Mode: -Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. -Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. Open Device Manager, expand the categories, remove all instances of any devices that were marked with a red X or a yellow exclamation mark in normal mode. Remove all items in the "Other" category. If any duplicates are found in the following categories, remove ALL instances of the item: Hard disk controllers, floppy disk controllers, CDROM, CD-ROM controllers, and Disk drives. Click OK, and restart in normal mode, letting Windows detect the items, and reboot when prompted. Woo Hoo!! Your instructions were prompt, detailed and easy to follow. The
computer is up and running well in Win98. Thank you so much, Glee. Once again these Microsoft newsgroups have saved much frustration, and this 70+'s couple have learned more and more each time we visit. "glee" wrote in message ...
